Been driving past this place for 25 years and always wanted to check it out. The ambiance is wonderful, "Filet Oscar" was fantastic. The service was less than satisfactory, not on par with the restaurant's history and feel. Stay away from the lobster. It was pathetic.
I've been visiting Atlantic City for many years, and, for about the past five, mostly dining at various restaurants inside the casinos (specifically the Temple Bar at Ceasar's and random places within Borgata). By contrast, The Knife and Fork is a stand-alone restaurant, which first opened its doors in 1912. Recently, it's been nicely remodeled.
We had a reservation (a must on weekends), and were promptly seated (upstairs) upon arrival. Their fresh-baked, homemade rolls were excellent.
My wife ordered "diver" Scallops in a cauliflower cream sauce (which were a special of the evening). I had an eight ounce fillet (medium rare). Both dishes were cooked perfectly, and very tasty. Everything on the menu is ala carte; we split a lettuce wedge salad with Jersey tomatoes and blue cheese dressing which was also good.
Overall, our meal was excellent, and we will definitely return. The restaurant offers valet parking, and reservations are a must. In general, the wait staff appeared to be relatively inexperienced, though extremely attentive. The pricing is consistent with similar high-end restaurants - our bill (which included two mixed drinks, and three glasses of wine) was $180 with tip.
Owned by the Dougherty family of Dock's Oyster House, the Knife & Fork has been totally remodeled. An Atlantic City institution for 80 years, you will love the steaks and the service. A little pricey, but well worth it for a special occasion. Right where Atlantic meets Pacific, the building design is very unique. Plenty of parking, or walk down from the Hilton or the Tropicana or hop on a Jitney. No matter how you get there, you'll love the Knife & Fork!
