Karen's is average: Karen's Chinese Restaurant is as average as you can get. The food is certainly better quality than your run of the mill greasy inner-city Chinese joint, but far from fine dining. Karen's offers a standard menu, with average food, and average prices. Dress is casual. Lots of tables, so you won't have to wait for a seat. Nothing fancy as far a dining room, dim lighting. If you're looking for decent Chinese food stop in, if you're looking for great Chinese food go to Tiger Noodles on Nassau Street or Sunny Garden on Rt 1 next to Princeton Market Fair. BYOB.
You can do much better for less money: Any restaurant in downtown Princeton has to compete with similar businesses on nearby Route 1, which generally offer much more convenient parking and lower prices. The only way they can do that is by serving great food, and Karen's Chinese Restaurant didn't do that during my visit. The five-spice duck appeared to be shredded more than sectioned, and was so overcooked that we often couldn't tell meat shreds from bone. The only tender parts were the big globs of fat remaining under the skin. The five-spice combination had a wonderful flavor; too bad the chef ruined the duck with bad preparation. The sesame shrimp -- supposedly one of their specialties -- was likewise overcooked (although the bed of broccoli was steamed perfectly); the portion size was small, and the sauce unexceptional. Certainly there's nothing about it to justify a 50% price increase over standard sweet-and-sour fare. Any restaurant can have an off night, and perhaps Karen's was having one of those. But I won't be going back to find out.
