Swagath is an excellent South Indian Restaurant. We went with friends and had wonderful authentic food. The service was very fast and friendly. The thali was very tasty and the idli and dahi vada were excellent. The Rasum was superb. The sambhar and curries were great. The ambience and decoration were elegant. We look forward to returning to Swagath for another fabulous meal. Highly recommended restaurant in Edison.
I don't know what counts as "authentic", as I'm not Indian and have never been to Tamil Nadu or Karnataka, but Swagath serves some of the tastiest South Indian food around. The rasam which comes almost as soon as you sit down is hot and usually very spicy, but very good. The sambar which comes with the dosas and idlis is also usually pretty spicy, but most everything else is not too spicy even for westerners... If you go to a vegetarian restaurant expecting "vegetables" you'll have to order a thali (large selection of different dishes served with bread and rice) or one of the bhajis (smaller selection with choice of bread). We usually order from the large selection of lentil, rice, or wheat dosas, idlis, and uttappams, or one of the "rice specials" which are marvelously seasoned rice -- I think that the coconut rice may be my favorite. The desserts are very nice too, if you have room. All the food tastes fresh and healthy at all times, and the service is good and quick too, at least in the early evening when we usually go.
Finally, this is a very family and kid friendly restaurant -- they are always happy to substitute (delicious and probably freshly made) yogurt for the spicy chutney and sambar that comes with the dosas and idlis, and have a "kids meal" which is just an idli and a plain dosa, with a scoop of ice cream for dessert. My son is the pickiest eater, but is always happy to go to the "dosa place", which is most always Swagath for us. We usually dine early, when they are not crowded but there are often other kids there.
I would hesitate to give five stars to what is really a fairly humble and inexpensive restaurant, but yahoo says four stars is just "good" and five stars is "excellent", so five stars it is.
Favorites:
Plain dosa, masala dosa, or mysore masala dosa
Coconut rice -- delicate flavor with curry leaves and coconut oil, and other spices
Swagath special uttapam
Puri Bhaji
"Kids meal" with yogurt instead of sambar and chutney (son's favorite)
