| About: | While the East Village has long been a hip neighborhood, it first was an ethnic community. This Ukranian restaurant is a remnant of that history, although it is extremely modern and bright looking. Veselka is a combination luncheonette and sidewalk cafe with an Eastern European air. Breakfast muffins, bagels, potato pancakes and cheese blintzes are among the selections. Lunch can be a hearty borscht and pierogies. For dinner, try the kielbasa or veal goulash. And anytime, stop in for an egg cream or dessert. |

Simply the best value in NYC. Fabulous food, great atmosphere. What else do you need to know? Run, don't walk to eat here.
The borscht is great and almost authentic. However, the food is more Polish than Ukrainian. It's like you stepped into a cheap diner in Lvov. Service was ok and no one seems to speak Ukrainian except for the cooks.
Great place for a hearty, cheap meal...
My friend from Kiev takes me here sometimes. He says the borscht tastes like back home. I like the perogies--cheese, meat and potato. The sweet potato ones rub us the wrong way... but give it a try, you may like it. Just be sure to ask for apple sauce! If you don't say anything they'll bring you onions and sour cream, which is good but not the way the real Russians do it. Also, if more than one person at your table orders perogies the plates sometimes get mixed up--this can be a nightmare for vegetarians! Specifying fried or boiled can help you tell the difference...
I like Veselka but the service can be dodgy. I got upset when my waitress was so busy flirting with my friend in Ukranian that she forgot we wanted to split the check. He ended up paying for me and I was not happy about it. I was surprised the woman didn't ask for his number before we left. Now we make a point of how we want the check before we order.
Veselka is a good place to have a hot chocolate and steal wifi if you're a commuter or a night owl. It's also a nice place to have coffee and snacks with friends on cold evenings. It's usually pretty quiet. Their beer selection is reasonable and the nosh can't be beaten at 2 o'clock in the morning...
