Fries... how simple! Their double fried Pommes Frites and simple and delicious. A nice sized portion can be a meal itself. There are only a few tables in the cramped area in the back, so grab them to go for a walk. The sauces are the important part here. Be daring and try a few. The Irish Curry and the Peanut or War sauces are my favorite, but they have many to pick from. You can sample any you like, so be sure to ask!
If I had known the frites would be as soggy as they were I would have asked them to fry them longer, even ask for a little more salt just for flavor. We ordered a regular size and it was very large. A good deal but they were very greasy. Ask for a paper bag when they hand you the frites cone.
Let me preface this review by first saying that my fiance is Dutch and lives a short bike ride away from the Belgian border. So Belgian fries are something that I've become veeerrrryyy familiar with in the last year. You might call me a fry fiend. When I'm there I can't get enough of the stuff. The standard frite special there is mayo and onions; oftentimes with curry ketchup. Nothing beats them after a night at the pub or for a quick snack on the go. They're one of the things I miss the most when I'm home. Unfortunately, they're impossible to find here but when I heard about Pommes Frites I made a point to add it onto my to-eat list for my next nyc trip.
Blech. Points for having authentic frite saus (had to pay extra for it) but the curry ketchup tasted and looked like heintz mixed with some red thai curry paste. Makes me wonder if anyone there has ever had the real thing. I saw them mixing sauces in the kitchen and from what I could see they were pouring pre-bought stuff from jars into vats of Hellman's mayo. It kind of put me off that I paid almost 20 bucks (2 lg fries w/curry & frite saus and 2 sodas) for something I could have made at home. I have no problem with eating pre-made stuff from jars, that's exactly what you get in Belgium only it'd cost around $10 bucks for the whole meal (and that's adjusting for paying with the euro). After a few limp soggy bites neither of us could go on. Is it too much to ask for a slightly crispy fry and maybe importing real curry ketchup to go with that frite saus?
It seems like previous reviewers enjoyed their fries and to be fair, I walked out before trying anything else. My advice to others is if you're willing to pay for it, try it and make your own judgments. Just don't fool yourself into thinking you're getting authentic Belgian anything.
