| About: | An East Village landmark that first opened in 1854, and is the oldest bar in Manhattan. McSorley's serves two kinds of beer: McSorley's Light and McSorley's Dark. There is sawdust on the floor, and historic bric-a-brac, photos and news clippings cover the walls. On weekdays it is a comfortable place to enjoy their tasty brew. On weekends, there is a long line of tourists and college kids. McSorley's did not allow women until the 1970s, and even today the crowd is primarily made up of men. |

great place with "real" atmosphere. The kind of atmosphere that chains now try and copy with fake memorabilia, etc.
My 2 favorite quotes from the waiters: "Drink up or get out!" and when asked how many he could carry the reply was "As many as you need" (both with a good Irish accent!)
Disappointed: I took a $11.00 cap ride from 43rd street to come to this Ale house on a tip from my father in California. The interior is impressive with a lot of history. The Ale is particularly good. However, I wanted to eat Irish food, either an Irish Stew, Bangers and Mash or a meat pie as seen on a documentary which featured the restaurant. On a week night, all that was available was a Burger, a Burger? You have to be kidding me! My Irish Great granduncle, would have punched the cook in the mouth.
Dark or Light?: Brusque service... dank room, hit or miss bathrooms and a tiny menu. Yet I always go back for more.
