Food Works Flatiron Business Overview

Edit Info

Company Information: This is both, a gourmet market and a popular, inexpensive cafe. Kids can sit down to enjoy a flash-cooked pizza from the "wave oven," while parents shop for imported cheese, fancy coffee blends and gourmet treats. The weathered barn wood makes this spot look a bit like a warehouse, and the casual atmosphere encourages people to stay and snack. Breakfast includes bagels and burritos, and lunch features soups, salads and sandwiches. For dinner, try the salmon, Caesar salad and smoked seafood.

Lunch takeout specialists: I have been looking for a good sushi takeout near my work (same block) for quite some time, but never thought of going in to the Food Works. One Friday I was bored and decided to give it a go and discovered they have a full-time sushi chef on staff! The pre-packaged rolls are pretty good, and the nigiri sushi is not bad (but a bit light on the cuts).

This place is sort of like Whole Foods only completely devoted to takeout and prepared foods. Everything looks quite good, and the line for sandwiches is usually long. Their soups are pretty delicious and they also offer an udon option which I have yet to try.

All-in-all, this place beats the pants off of the Beyond Cafe which I have been falling back on since I started working in this area. Good food, not a bad price, and the fastest registers west of Broadway.
