Shhhhhh.... don't tell too many people, but this is seriously the best Chinese food that you'll get anywhere, including China.

Nestled on a small crooked street in NYC's Chinatown, Hop Kee and it's co-owned neighbor Wu-Hop are true gems of authentic Chinse cuisine.

No tourists please... unless your about the real food. This is not a fancy restaraunt, nor of the atmosphere one might want if taking a once in a lifetime trip.

    But the food...

    Oh dear lord, the food.

This is not about your garden variety General Tso chicken and Beef & Broccoli (though they have those things on the menu anyway). This is about authentic Chinese (Cantonese, more specifically) recipes that will put to shame anything you've had previously.

All the seafood is great, the soft shell crabs in particular are to die for.
    Salt & pepper squid, awesome.
Snails in a black bean sauce... oh man, you haven't lived til you popped a few of these down.

Actually, anything in the house black bean sauce is good here. It's so good, I'm salivating thinking about it.

Welcome to Chinatown, welcome to Hop Kee (or Wu Hop), welcome to the best Chinese food in the world.

Hop Kee is one of those restaurants New Yorkers go back to again and again because of the reliability of the ingredients, classic recipes, and flawless cooking techniques.
Tourists are welcome anytime but this is not Joe's Shanghai and this is not the kind of place to have Peking duck. Some of our family's favorites are sauteed snails, Cantonese crabs (amazing sauce), pan fried flounder, sea cucumbers, and shrimp or squid fried with salt and pepper.

There is a reason why this restaurant (along with Bo Ky, New York Noodle Town, Pho Nha Trang) remain in business, and that's because most of the patrons are New Yorkers.

This is THE Chinese restaurant to go to in New York City. I've been going there for 20 years and I never get tired of it. I highly recommend it. Just be prepared to be surrounded by Filipinos. Well, I'm Filipino so I feel comfortable there.
