Pink Tea Cup

Company Information: This is a tiny Southern soul food restaurant painted pink both inside and out, and located on a quiet street in Greenwich Village . It is a neighborhood favorite because of the giant stack of delicious pancakes you can find there, served with a pork chop on the side. The fried chicken, black-eyed peas and cheese macaroni are considered by some to be the best in the West Village.

   Over the Memorial Day weekend a good friend and I dined at The Pink Tea Cup. This was not a pleasant experience and sad to say, another African-American owned business has bitten the dust in my book!
   
   When I first arrived, I took a look at the sign advertising the establishment and was immediately turned off. To have such an iconic status, you would think the sign would not appear to be so juvenile. The dirty and cluttered windows were no better. There were 2 people standing outside when I arrived, so I initially thought the place was closed. When I walked inside, the heat, stale smell of cooking odors and grease hit me like a one-two punch! With it being such a nice breezy day, you’d think the door would’ve been open to let in the fresh air, or maybe an air-conditioner or fan would’ve been put to use. I started to get up and leave, but I convinced myself that some of OUR establishments do not show the finest decor, but clearly make up for it with the taste in food... so I stayed.
   
   The waitress’ attitude was a big turnoff and she gave no sense of customer service whatsoever. She took her time coming to the table, gave curt answers when asked questions about the menu and brought our order to the table with major attitude. We were not asked what type of dressing we preferred on our salads, and the soup, although delicious contained the entire shoulder of Lot’s wife (grab your Bible, you’ll figure it out), the sweet tea was nothing more than overly sweetened and super strong Lipton and the chicken which was hidden under a sea of gravy was so tough I swear it was a rooster! The macaroni and cheese were a poor imitation of Kraft and the string beans had to be seasoned with tin because I could still taste the can!
   
   Normally after working all day and not having time for lunch I am simply ravenous and whatever I do not eat, I request a doggie-bag. My first (and probably last) meal at the Pink Tea Cup was so disappointing that I left most of it (including the sweet tea) on the table! I also found it to be very tight and uncomfortable. Our table kept wobbling and when I looked down at the floor, I saw that one of the table legs was braced by folded up paper. The bathroom can be found by descending a spiral staircase built for Barbie, so if you’re like me and hate closed in spaces, it’s best to use the restroom beforehand and limit your food intake. The music’s good, but a bit too loud. Unless I hear of some major changes, I will not patronize this establishment again. The pictures on the internet had me totally fooled. The webmaster deserves an award!!!

   The service was good and the food was great!: I must admit before my trip to NY last week (4/07), I was a bit nervous to eat here based on the reviews. I'm so glad I did not allow what I read to stop me though. My girlfriend and I are from Virginia and she and her mother owned a catering business for many years and we all enjoy good food. The Pink Teacup is now our favorite spot in NY. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner and everything was excellent. The greens, fried pork chops, macaronni & cheese, rice & beans, grits, eggs, the ambience and the staff. The salmon croquettes are my favorite and my girlfriend had the fried pork chops for each meal. The prices are good, the atmosphere is cozy and customer service was great. The only bad thing is the extra 4 lbs I picked up by eating here. To all of those who have written unpleasant reviews, you must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed that day, or you are not really familiar with what good Soul Food is. The photo's of past customers is just what adds to the ambience. They are in every restaurant, that's worth visiting:)

   Intimate Perfection: While the Pink tea cup is small its very cozy and intimate. The service is great and you really can't beat the prices for the quality you get. Not the place you'd want to take a bunch of friends but its a perfect first date eatery or if you and a friend or 2 want to enjoy a casual dinner then this is a choice spot. Visit The Pink Tea Cup I promise you'd return for more.
