| About: | Plataforma Churrascaria is a Rodizio style restaurant. Rodizio is a method of serving meat that originated in the south of Brazil in the early 1800's. The concept is to serve a wide variety of different cuts of beef - sirloin, baby beef, top round, skirt steak, short ribs, brisket, rib eye; pork - ham, pork ribs, sausage, pork loin, suckling pig; chicken - chicken legs, chicken hearts; turkey - wrapped in bacon; lamb, fish, etc. in succession, to each diner individually right at their table. A meal typically begins with a trip to the gourmet salad bar, which features a variety of vegetables and composed salads in addition to four hot dishes. We also serve a selection of side dishes at your table. The main course, the highlight of the meal, will start when you flip your coaster-sized "chip" from the red side to the green side, signaling the meat cutters you're ready to be served. THE WAIT:
Do no not expect to be seated anywhere close to your reservation time. And if you ask "what is happening with my table" expect to get glared at.
I should preface this review by saying that I am a chef from Tuscany. I have traveled all over the world eating, learning and experiencing food and the culture around it.
THE ATMOSPHERE:
I can do this in one word, CHAOTIC.
If you are looking a for a romantic and quiet dining experience do not go here! If you are looking for a place where they bring you tons of food, but then make you feel like you have to eat all really fast, then yes go to Plataforma.
FIRST COURSE:
The salad bar had quite a large selection with almost everything reaching a "10" on the presentation level, but honestly the presentation was the ONLY good thing at that bar. The food was too oily, over seasoned and not one thing on there REALLY tasted good. They had bad Sushi for some reason (not a Brazilian dish) and no soy sauce. A "Make your own salads" area which included 3 types of lettuce and a few dressings to work with and that's it. So basically salad bar, NOT GOOD.
THE MAIN COURSE:
So here is the part of the meal that I was sent here for, the meat. Honestly in one word I can tell you that it is 100% "eh...". Nothing spectacular at all here. If you know anything about high quality meats you will know that this was all cooked too fast and by people who don't know much about how to cook it. Don't get me wrong, nothing was bad, in fact the lamb was very good, but I was expecting to have my "doors blown off" by this place judging by everything I have read and heard about it. But seriously, after the salad bar, incident I new that that was never going to happen. If you want good meat in this country to have to go to the Southwest or Texas. New Yorkers can only get meat that has been on refrigerated trucks. Nothing is "Same day slaughter" here. It's just impossible to get it in the city, but for the prices at Plataforma it really should be much better.
With the meat, they also bring you a selection of small sides to go with it. Fried Polenta, Fried Bananas, Broccoli and POWDERED MASHED POTATOES! Yes; no matter what the staff tells you I can assure you that they are serving powdered mashed potatoes. And when I asked someone if they were indeed powdered, I was approached by three different managerial types; too many people!
Over all I will say that yes, the meal was pretty good. Not even close to what the hype is though. If you are looking for an overpriced, chaotic dining experience with slightly above average food, then you will love this place.
Excellent for large work gathering, gourmet buffet truly is, and our vegetarian (no cheese) loved it. The service model is fast, even swift, high-energy. The food is excellent, meat-lovers will be in paradise, and the gourmet salad bar will pleaes the rest.
In a few words - Highly recommend - Outstanding meal, great service.
We took in the restaurant as a pre-theater meal. When I knew we would be late they easily pushed back our reservation 30 minutes. When we arrived we were seated immediately. When I was researching restaurants I was a bit put off by the $59.95 fixed price but in retrospect I can tell you it was an excellent deal. Our party consisted of 3 adults and 3 teens and there was something for everyone. The wine list was also very reasonable.
