We just hosted a dinner for 14 in the private Champagne Room. The room was very nice, with a large rectangular table, but unshielded from noise from the bar, which was especially tough on the guests on that side of the table. Great time was had by all in spite of Compass staff. We had inattentive service from a very nice waitress and downright rudeness from the sommelier/maitre'd. We ordered a red and a white wine for the table, after finding something of quality at an affordable price (long, expensive wine list). Neither wine was available, which seemed more than a coincidence, and we got sneers from the maitre'd when discussing our alternate choices. The wait staff seemed undone by our periodic moves to different seats so we could all talk to each other. We were not at all fazed when they couldn't correctly place the dish at the right person's place but they seemed very disturbed - this upset their sense of order. Food was good and plentiful, except for the poorly prepared paella special that was merely seafood on top of rice, with no attempt to blend the ingredients into an appealing dish. 3 lb lobster was good, but was ordered steamed and arrived grilled. As for desserts, the peach/blueberry cobbler was transporting, the strawberry/basil parfait was just plain odd, and the donuts and iced coffee dessert was Dunkin Donuts and lukewarm coffee in a glass. All said, it was a terrific affair but the attitude of the staff left us cold -- especially one of the guests, a chef, who was especially appalled.
