| About: | The Upper West Side is home to a number of gourmet marketplaces, but perhaps none as impressive as this one. It is hard to walk by Zabar's without stopping in to purchase some of their top quality, affordably priced delicacies. Nobody does it better when it comes to olives, cheese, smoked salmon, whitefish and other New York essentials. It can get unbearably crowded however, and during some Jewish holidays you might even have to wait on line to get into the store. |

User Rating: 5 out of 5 starsWell first off, you dont really come to Zabar's to eat persay (though they have added a small cafe).
You come to shop and buy stuff for you to eat later.
Where to start?
How about Coffee...
They have barrels upon barrels of gourmet coffee laying around. Made with beans from the world over (Kenyan, Columbian, Bolivian, Jamaican, etc...). My favorite is their Zabars special blend, the best you'll ever have. Straight up good, bold flavor with a goodly amount of caffeine.
I disagree with the previous commenter who said it tastes like "McDonalds coffee". But I agree with the sentiment, it's simple and good.
The rest of the store is just a wonderfully chaotic whirlwind of gourmet flavors.
Cheese of every delicious variety imaginable...
Dry goods up the whazoo! Things that you'll love but didnt even know existed. Delcitable delicacies hidden all over the place.
Meats... many, many meats. The ones of smoked varities (particulary the Italian ones)are especially noteworthy. And the fish is of the highest quality.
Cool and unique cookware... again, you never knew you even needed it.
I find it truly challenging to describe just how awesome this place is. It has so much stuff that it'd be impossible to list or name it all... walls and walls and aisles and aisles of stuff.
Also, there is no way I could accurately portray the feeling of quality that permeates from everything in the store.
The only way to experience the unique wonder that is Zabar's is to check it out for yourself. You won't regret it! It's a fun story just waiting to happen.
User Rating: 5 out of 5 starsGood regular old coffee: I had read about this place many times and checked it out on my last trip to NYC. We just got two cups of coffee, but it was good coffee nonetheless. About as good as McDonalds coffee. Which is nice, because I don't consider it "fancy". Next time I would like to try their breakfast.
