Good food, low prices: Service was actually BETTER than most Ethiopian restaurants (which is not good!)
True Ethiopian food or watered down?: The quality of the food and flavor seem to be watered down. I dont think this resturant is catering to the very people who create it. I guess if you are not too familar with real ethiopian food, a person would have thought it was good. Food can still be "pretty" and taste good. You are better off getting the recipies and cooking it yourself. I can not say how many times the waiter checked other tables before he came to mine and we were there before a majority of the crowd.
Finger licking good!: It is set in the middle of two bars on a street that has everything from Comedy to Tattoo. Meskerem beckoned me and my friend to the come inside. We walked down the stairs and peeked into the door and saw a group standing near the door and all the tables except the two near the door occupied. We walked inside and were immediately seated between a couple and two girlfriends, like ourselves. We smiled at each other and took in the interior. The lights were dimmed and casted a rosy red hue on its patron but there were also so Christmas ornaments and lights dangling overhead. The interior didn't really give off an ethnic feel as the tables and chairs were typical cafe furniture. Nothing really noticable on the walls other than the mirrors. Despite the lack of anything visually Ethiopian besides the waitresses and bartender, there was a relaxing vibe in the place. The music had us bobbing our head and swaying our bodies as we wondered outloud who was the artist. Our waitress came to our table to take our order and when we tried to order Ethiopian beer, we were disappointed to hear that they were out. I ordered the second entree and my friend ordered the first entree (I can't remember the names but I know the placement on the menu). When our food came out it was in a table size lipped plate. There were buttery greens and a pureed spicy bean side that was on top of a flat spongy bread. Actually the plate was covered by the bread and the food was placed on top of it. We received another plate of bread that was folded like little napkins. We smacked our lips and shared that meal with our hands. I kind of wished I had received a hand wipe before eating just to make sure they were clean but a few germs on my hands didn't kill us. Everything on the plate was delicious and my friend even complimented on how good the beans were and she doesn't like beans. We had a surprise at the end of the meal when we thought we had enough to eat but we thought there was still more on the plate, I talked my friend into eating the last piece of chicken which was covered in a berebere sauce and it wasn't the chicken it was the EGG! We walked out rubbing our bellies and the money we still had in our pocket. I would recommend this place to others for the experience if nothing else. Both my thumbs are up to Meskerem!
