It is a great small school. Mr. Henshaw is a great principal. There is a no bullying policy and the school is small enough for the teachers to have a handle on what is really going on. The children learn respect for teachers and for each other. The teachers are very kind and caring. I highly recommend it.
Although it is a small school and the enrollment could become dangerously low, I have to disagree with LostHope tremendously. Its a gem on the lake. THe classes are small so the students get individualized attention. Principal Henshaw is very involved in every aspect of the school. He even does PreK/K lunch and recess duty sometimes! He is firm, but calm when speaking to the kids, and humerous with adults (moms and dads alike). He is easily reachable by phone and email, and will work with you for the benefit of your child. They school follows NY state standards of education and the children are required to take state tests, so there is no concern of "are they learning the right material/skills?" As a teacher(elsewhere), I find that St. John's is a great place, has what my child needs, and offers a safe environment. Although it doesnt have al of the bells and whistles of other private schools, the teachers offer compassion, are caring, build character, and push the students to learn to their highest potential - which is what I like to see in a school.
The moral is zip for the last few years. The Principal Henshaw is not much on hand with everyday operations. Never available to come to the phone. Doesn't show much respect speak when speaking to the moms as much as the dads. The smirk on his face says it all. Two teacher behavior over the years were never address. Children after children were pulled out of the school in the middle of the school year. The school faces possibility in the near future of closing down due to enrollment. It's really sad to see any Catholic School close.
