Company Information: Long before trendy bars slapped up buck's heads, Zlata Praha was adorned with lots of musky horns, hooves, and heads. The decor homage to Czech culture is worth a visit alone, but the food is also amazing. Great Czech beers are on tap. There's a small garden in the back. Zlata Praha, which roughly means Golden Prague, also has random theme nights throughout the year, such as wild game night. This is probably not the best place for vegetarian cuisine. Otherwise it's a great place to get the flavor of the Old Country. Try the pork goulash- it's divine. - Wynne Boelt

I have been to Zlata Praha many times and have always been very pleased by the traditional czech foods which I grew up with including a fabulous duck, goose in season and traditional side dishes. Their fruit palacinke (crepes) make a great desert. It is one of the few places I know of wher you can also ask for czech pilsner on tap. The decor could be updated but the service was excellent. Its a great place to grab a bite and take the train from Astoria to Shea for a ballgame. Try it out.
Absurd passive aggresive service: Absurd is a word I have never used to describe a restaurant. This is the only word that embodies my experience at Zlata Praha. The delicious but slightly bland food, the adequate portions and the overtly old-school Czech atmosphere over emphasized for Americans first enchanted me. It was the service that left me jaded.
When I came through the door, I told the waitress that I wanted the fruit dumplings. When it came time for dessert, I ordered. I waited 40 minutes with an empty water, before I was able to flag down the waitress.
“We don’t have any more,” she said, “There are a lot of sad people.”
When was she going to tell me?
Then three by three the dumplings come marching out of the kitchen going to other tables. At least nine dumplings went to a table that came in after us.
I was so livid that I just asked for my check. She tried to cheat us on the bill. It took four trips for her to recalculate the bill.
My final bill was $11.90. I gave her a twenty, and she returned with change. She passive-aggressively gave me eight one dollar bills and ten one cent coins. For the first time, I tripped less than 15%. I gave her one of her cents back.
My father warned me about Zlata Praha’s service, but I didn’t listen.
“The food is good, but the service is horrible,” he told me over the phone, before I went.
About 15 years ago, he took my mother. The service was wretched, my father left 10%. The server chased my father and mother out of the restaurant and said that people tip 15% in New York. He asked my father for more money.
“You're right. Give me the five back,” my father said.
The waiter returned the five to my father. My father put the five in his pocket.
“I don’t HAVE to give you anything!” he said. Then he and my mother walked off. They never returned.
