After visiting Bistro M several times, I have concluded it is among the finest restaurants on LI, and rivals many top NYC dining establishments. For example, if you enjoy Telepan (and not taking anything away from Telepan), a highly rated NYC restaurant, Bistro M is every bit its equal. I mention Telepan, as the style of cooking is similar possibly because Mitchell Sudock, a CIA trained chef, also trained with the chef at Telepan when they were both at Gotham Bar & Grill.
Mitch prepares his dishes using the freshest, local vegetables. His sauces are incomparable. Among the dishes we tried and recommend are for starters his fried green tomatos with goat cheese, fois gras, tuna tartare and all salads. If he has the fried quail with homemade pepper bisquit and sausage, do not miss it. Entrees include Pistacchio crusted Halibut, superb duck breast and strudel duck confit, steak selections such as a 14oz Rib Eye, NY Strip and Filet Mignon, Venison, Garlic crusted Rack of lamb, and believe it or not, his Free Range Organic broiled chicken.
Occasionally,as a side dish Mitch prepares (get ready), Macaroni and Cheese with lobster and black truffles. Not to be missed, trust me. Every side dish is memorable including his goat cheese and yukon gold potato gratin and virtually all farm fresh vegetables.
All desserts are homemade, including teardrop triple chocolate mousse, warm apple crisp with home made ice cream, various seasonal fruit sorbets, and the most intense dark chocolate sorbet we ever sampled. The menu is changed regularly and choices picked for seasonality. The very capable waitstaff will point out changes and specials. His bar is staffed by Mitch's wife Elena and head waiter, Esteban, a mixologist extraordinaire, who has complied a list of unique martinis.
They also are building a wine list and have some very extraordinary bottles for you enophiles. We sampled several Red wines from Chile that are or were ahead of the curve. For example you should grab the Carmenere. This wine is just getting the recognition it deserves. S9 Shiraz, and if they still have any, Don Melchor, among a small but growing & well thought out list.
The restaurant is small, so on weekends make a reservation, however, I enjoy dining on weeknights when I can, as the noise level can get up there on Saturday evening. Also, during the week, the restaurant has been offering 3 course specials.
This is a gem of a restaurant.
