food's awfully bland, $25 for a seafood pasta that contains only a couple of calamari and minced to the bone lobster. The mussels has this too fishy smell that obviously is not fresh at all, considering the place is right next to the water. The bread was only brought out when we had to ask for it, although it comes with the menu that we ordered, terrible!
Go there for the ambiance, order the safest ones ie; burgers, and drinks and some appetizers, but please do not order the main Entree highly overpriced with nothing to back it up. You are warned!
$30.00 for tasteless stuffed fish, no app, salad, drinks, or dessert is outrageous. No wonder the place was empty. Such a shame too because the view would be beautiful if the windows were cleaned.
Fresh updated decor - what about the menu??: Bayville has long been a neighborhood of seasonal activity and waterfront restaurants. With the recent addition and refreshing of the Bayville "strip" comes competition for existing eateries. Wall's Wharf has been a staple for years, and has one of the nicest outdoor, beachside dining spots. However they're going to have to undertake more than decorative updating to keep their customers.
Decor / Ambiance:
Though the dining room has been redone (new contemporary wallpaper; fresh white paint; the old carpeting gone; new windows; old shelving fixtures replaced and updated; raised ceiling) and looks quite crisp and modern, the gas 'fireplace' remains dingy and could have been whitewashed to lend itself to the new updated look; unpainted, it looks forgotten and out of place.
We asked for the unset, open window table (we were two) and were told it was reserved only to learn, (as we sat next to a roach on the wall our bus boy killed upon request) the window table was "reserved" for the owner. Good to know customers come first.
The "music" was either satellite or Muzak-type. I haven't heard "Winchester Cathedral" on the pipe organ in 20 years let alone "Muskrat Love" by the Percy Faith Orchestra. (Great for the 80+ crowd - it was sedated and sleepy.) Jazz piano or sexy, modern ambient music would be better suited to the new decor.
Food and Service:
Our server was articulate, friendly and attentive.
Table water was tap and overly-chlorinated; the lemon wedge made it lemon-chlorine water.
Bread basket arrived well after we ordered our meal and was dissappointing: baguette slices, two white rolls - not warm; no butter.
The menu lacks the freshness one expects from a seafood restaurant - in short there was nothing really new or different, short of the pleasing cheese and fruit appetizer we opted for at dessert.
The N.E. clam chowder was fair, though for a "cup" $5.00 is pricey considering there was only one piece of clam in the cup, and no soup crackers aside. The lobster bisque was "good", rated by my fellow diner; the lobster meat was finely chopped and sprinkled on the soup.
The mixed broil was fair. Sole - good, tender, flavorful; shrimp - weak and tasteless; scallops - large and tender; the black rice was an interesting, nutty-tasting side; shoestring veggies were overdone and limp. The whole entree was luke warm; asking for a reheat would have overcooked the fish.
The coffee was good and hot.
We *will* visit Wall's again, but for lunch on the deck with a bucket of beer and a burger or salad; or I will go with my girlfriends for frozen drinks, appetizers and desserts on the beach. Not dinner.
