This is tail of a wayward sailor from St. Petersburg, FL, chugging up the Erie Canal, that just had the fortunate pleasure to wander into Parillo's Amory Grill and have a great meal and be treated with all the warmth and friendship that you could wish for.
I had just have some of my crew (1) jump ship in Amsterdam, NY, I find myself alone in a new town far away from home and friends. The next day and a half I spend calling up friends and family looking for crew and even walking around town asking business owners if they know anyone looking for a job for a few days. Not getting any positive results, I am brooding over my situation and need to go out and enjoy myself. I lookup Italian restaurants on Yahoo in Amsterdam, read the reviews and decide this is the place for me, and take a short cab ride over to Parrilo's,
Parrilo's is in an old industrial neighborhood that has fallen on hard times does not look that inviting until I pull up in the cab and see the neon, hear the croud in the bar area. I walk in and sat at the bar and ordered a drink and some food from the bartender.
Well the food came, first wonderful warm Italian bread with garlic and butter and seasoning covering the bread and a cup of great homemade soup. Then the salad came with a very nice creamy Italian house dressing. I had already eaten the all the bread (it was that good) when my meal came (chicken egg plant and mozerella and a side of Spaghetti) - wow - I could not believe the portion size (still eating it now).
Now, I often go to Italian restaurants and complain about the sauce because, we Italians all think our own homemade sauce's or marinara's are the best, well I thought the tomato sauce sauce's and marinara's was very nice and seemed to made with fresh ingredients, I was impressed!
After I hate and enjoyed a beer, the owner Jackie came over and told me a few jokes, after a while I told her my tale of woe and my situation and she started to try to help me out. After awhile it was time to leave but Jackie insisted that she buy me a drink and talk with her brother Joe about my adventures. As it turned out, Joe and I had a lot in common in out careers and interest. After some lively conversation, Joe and Jakie gave me a ride back to the boat and I look forward to their friendship.
Parillo's Armory Grill is my favorite!! Their food and service is out of this world!!!! We went on Mother's Day and I have my favorite..Vodka Rigatoni. It was amazing..as always. I recommend that you try it. I promise, you will be hooked. The atmosphere is very much like being in Italy.
They have always had amazing food. The place had gotten a bit rundown, but recently renovated. Now it is what it tastes like.......a legitimate South Boston-like legitimate Italian risterante. Authentic.... And reasonable. Whenever we come to the northeast, we make sure to go out there.
