I've heard great things about Joe's Cycle Repair, and I'm sure he's a very good technician. He is NOT, however, a people person. When I went there with my boyfriend, to drop off MY bike, he avoided speaking directly to me and would not look me in the eyes. When I asked questions, he answered my boyfriend. I'm not a bimbo or an airhead. I have a brain and resent this kind of response. But I remained friendly.

That aside, I left the bike there on a Monday, after making an appointment for that day. He was to do an oil change and check the bike's horsepower, because it felt sluggish. He promised a call by the end of Wednesday. I called him on Thursday after hearing nothing. He said he had a guy out and had 58 bikes in the shop, so hadn't gotten to mine yet. I asked him when he might, and he said he hoped by the end of Friday. I called him after 3 on Friday.

He'd checked the HP, but hadn't yet gotten to the service. I asked him when he would, and he said, "You won't get that bike back tomorrow." I asked him when I would, and he went on about the guy out sick for three days and how busy they were. I'd heard this before, but let him finish and told him, "I completely understand that things like this happen and that you're very busy, but I would have appreciated a phone call earlier in the week, so I could have had the option of picking up the bike, having it to ride this week, and bringing it in another time."

I am not quick to anger, nor do I have a short temper. I was very reasonable, but also won't let people walk all over me. If I'm not happy with the service, I'll let you know, in an appropriate and courteous way. And I did.

His response: "You know what? You come pick the bike up today and bring it to another dealer!" I said, "Joe?" to try to get him to calm down, and he said, "No, I have 58... just pick the bike up today!" And he hung up.

The right reponse? How about, "I'm sorry for the delay and inconvenience."

Joe, you just lost a customer. You're apparently a very busy guy, though, so you probably don't care. But you lost an organizer in a rather large local motorcycle club, full of other riders (whom my boyfriend has referred to Joe in the past) who have lots of friends who also ride.

Joe, you're apparently good enough at what you do to be too busy to handle the load and treat people with courtesy and respect.

Recently, I bought a 2003 Honda Shadow and the only thing it needed was a new rear tire. The day after I bought it I went through the whole insurance and registration process. Then, seeing as it was one of my rare days off (and during the work week) I was hoping to get that tire replaced so I could ride. A friend told me about Joe's a few days before. He ordered a tire through the shop and had it put on while he waited. So I tried calling Joe's a few times, but I didn't get an answer. I then called every bike repair/dealer in the area for a tire. It was the same story for each shop: need to order a tire; leave the bike overnight. But I needed to ride that day. So I called Joe's one more time, and after 20 rings they answered. ....A very long story....shorter....they had the tire I needed in stock, and I got it mounted that same day. The time I spent at the shop was less than 25 minutes. I was able to ride 100 miles that day. And the reason they were slow to answer the phone was because they are a very busy shop. I saw 4 inspections come and go while I waited for my tire. Highly recommended. Reasonable price. Good service.

Joe and Larry at Joe's Cycle: I came to know Joe's Cycle when I was riding through Mechanicsville a few years back. I stopped because I had a problem with my carbs on my Goldwing 1100 as we were out touring. Joe took the time to adjust them, which no other dealer was able to do, seems whenever I went to the other dealers, it always left in the same condition, no power on the steep inclines, not so when Joe adjusted them, that was the first time in 2 years the bike ran like new, and it was a 1983. But that's not the only problem, while he was tuning the carbs, he noticed I had a hole in my timing cover, which was eating away at my belt. He told us to walk over to a local eating establishment and when we got back, my motorcycle would be ready, he said, I'm not letting you leave with that belt chewed up like that, so we did go to eat and when we came back, Joe was waiting for us, and the bike was 100% ready to ride. The price was very fair, the service was excellant and Joe's shop has been my repair sh
