Great Tradition: This resturaunt has been serving great food for over 70 years now. The Hamburgers are freshly ground beef, never frozen; the corned beef is corned in house; and the roast beef is roasted in house. Along with many other traditional items. The seafood is delivered multiple times a week, and the french fries are cut, peeled, and cooked right in the kitchen. My kids think the coolest part is that you can watch the cooks prepare everything on the menu if you choose to go into the bar area. My favorite part is that nothing on the menu is over $15. Nothing. The average special during the week is about $10, and the seafood on fridays are slightly more. On saturdays they offer generous portions of Prime Rib and full racks of Barbecued Baby Back Ribs. This establishment has been in business for over 70 years, and is still owned by the same great family. All of the full-time employees(5) have been working there for most of their adult lives respectively. They are friendly and they are good at what they do. Great meal for all ages. Homemade food and a full bar, it has deserved its great reputation. Staying in business in that area couldn't be easy, but the South End Tavern has, and is going stronger than ever today.
Slipping away by degrees!: The South end Tavern is slipping and I hate to say it as I have been a customer and a fan for many years. Yes, a decent meal can still be had there, but as a whole prices have gone up a little faster than many other places while portion sizes have gotten smaller. Quality always slightly irregular there has crossed over to become too often a problem. The service is still the same as always but somehow the place has gotten away from its working class roots and dispite the introduction of some new and sometimes very decent additions to the menu, such as lobster bisque soup, which varies greatly from visit to visit, the place seems to gotten kind of "yuppieish". In that area it could never compete and hence it seems it has been seeing fewer customers of late. Too bad! I will come back now and then but not with regularity until it gets back to being the great place it used to be.
South End Tavern, YUCK!!: for a place once known for great prices, large portions and great service, WHAT HAPPENED? The food is tasteless, portions smaller than ever, the wait staff is awful. EVERYTHING is tasteless and flat, barely warm. Their famous creamed cod is terrible and really salty. The burgers are not fit for my dog.The inmates are guarding the prison, pocketing the tab!
