I agree with the other reviewer that the Phoenicia Diner has great atmosphere, particularly if you are a writer
seeking some inspiration.
That said, even writers have to eat. For that I would suggest Russ's Country Kitchen just before the
"PD" on the same side of Rte. 28W. It's clean, the staff is friendly and the food is affordable, fresh, and good.
Try the biscuits and sausage gravy--the sausage is homemade and it's the kind of stick-to-your-ribs food that will get you through a cold Catskill morning. The coffee cups could be a little larger, but why quibble when that
gravy is so darned good?
You can also head up the road a bit and go into Phoenicia proper and visit either Brio, the Alamo, or Sweet Sues.
Brio is more casual, a good mix of locals and tourists, open for breakfast lunch, and dinner. Good breakfasts, and awesome burgers. The Alamo
Cantina next door (owned by the same proprietor) has an awesome bar and decent Mexican food, most
notably the grilled red snapper tacos.
Sweet Sues attracts a little more upscale crowd, especially on the weekends. Open for breakfast and lunch
only, the pancakes and french toast are legendary. Lunches are creative, and all food is fresh and in many
cases organic.
Enjoy your visit to the Catskills. And if you write, do visit the Phoenicia Diner... :-)
This place is out of a movie!: This place is out of a movie and come to find out it was in a movie starring Robin Williams and I think Kevin Costner. Your pretty much driving in the middle of the Catskills with beautiful scenery when out of nowhere you see the Phonecia Diner ~ it's so out of place you think you it might be a mirage and expect to see Marilyn Monroe and James Dean sitting in the window. It reminds me of the Twilight Zone in the best sense. The waitstaff seem like something out of a 50's with the whole set up where you can see the cook; local, with a healthy dose of friendly suspicion when you walk in there. It's def the greasy spoon experience with alot of local newspaper clippings around and old photos. It's quirky but it works ~ I always smile when I go by that place now! always wondering if it will be there when I drive by....
