Love this place. I remember going here as a little boy back in the 80s. Red checkered table cloths, chianti bottles holding candles and an accordion player. The food here is incredible and now that I'm a grown man with children of my own, we'll make the drive upstate when visiting NYC to soak in the authentic Italian atmosphere. Hasn't changed much from my days growing up in NY and its appropriate that I'm greeted with old family photos lining the walls the moment I set foot into the restaurant. Here's hoping the restaurant continues to create memories for generations to come.
If it wasn't for the entertainment I wouldn't have even given them 2 stars.
I called Milanese and explained that my partner had just been through a terrible ordeal with lung cancer and on her upcoming birthday I wanted to make it special for her. There were also relatives coming from out of state. We remembered years ago the food was good and the little family owned restaurant had great ambiance so we decided this was the perfect place to celebrate the fact that my partner was still on this earth and celebrating another birthday. We had so much to be grateful for.
I called Milanese Restaurant to reserve a table and to explain what my partner had just been through. I told the person on the other end of the phone (I thought it was the owner) the whole story and that this was a very special day. After reserving seating for 8, I also gave card numbers so that no bill would be brought to the table, and told her to add 20% for the waiter/waitress. She asked if we would be having a cake and I told her we would have one at home.
After speaking with a family member I decided it would be nice if they sang "Happy Birthday" to my partner at the restaurant, so I called and asked if they could add that, the lady said, "Yes." She also suggested that we could have a slice of cheesecake with a candle and I agreed to that.
Upon entering the restaurant something didnât feel right. We all sat down and enjoyed the entertainment. A young dark-haired lady named Jenna was our waitress. And without a smile or any pleasantries proceeded to take our orders, which by the way, we had to memorize because she took the menu back before taking our orders. Well, we waited and waited, but I thought, the food is very good and worth the wait, so I dismissed the fact that we waited so very long for our meals. We were after all enjoying the entertainment.
After receiving our dinners, my partner and I ordered Linguine Pescatore it was so bland, I thought maybe they asked the hospital for their recipe for this dish. In fact I think the hospital's food would have been tastier. One other member of the group also complained of her dish being very bland, everyone else said they were satisfied.
Now, I am beginning to worry as there is no sign that anyone knows we are the party with the special birthday, so I get up, find the owner and just verify what we have spoken about on the phone. She looked at me as though it were the first time she was hearing any of it, and told me if I wanted to order a cake it was too late. I explained that we had agreed on a slice of cheesecake and the singer to sing Happy Birthday, and she agreed. I also reminded her about the bill.
After we finished our bland dinners, Jenna the lazy waitress asked us to pass our dishes to her, I guess it was too much for her to walk and pick the dishes up herself. I almost asked if she wanted us to wash them too.
Well, as you may have already guessed, the dinner and desert came and went, no singing, no cheesecake with a candle, nothing that we had previously agreed on. Oh, well, they did sing to another patron and brought her a slice of cheesecake with a candle. And of course, you guessed it, they even came with the bill, just as I had asked them not to do and they had forgotten Jenna's 20% tip (not that she deserved it) and of course that was a big to-do. The only thing they did get right was the card number!
All in all it was the worst experience, and I will NEVER return to Milanese again. This was such a special occasion, I wanted it to be a special memory for my partner, and of course the Milanese part will not be, thank goodness family made it special for her.
Milanese Restaurant: Absolutly wonderful, the food is mouth watering delicious. The owner takes time out to greet and entertain the guest with old fashion tricks that keep the young and old guessing and amuesed.
It's the type of place you want to bring your hold family for a great Sunday style dinner.
