We went to The Old Homestead to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary on a recent Saturday night. Although the restaurant was relatively empty when we got there around 6:30 p.m., we waited about 10 minutes before we were greeted at the door by a hostess. We were seated in the enclosed porch. This was not a good place to sit as everyone's conversations reverberated off the walls like an echo chamber and both my husband and I left with a headache.
There is no printed menu and trying to listen to the waiter recite 20 or so dishes was very trying and also very hard to remember. I ordered the 12 oz. prime rib and my husband got the 16 oz ribeye steak.
First came out a basket of raisin bread and onion rolls. I don't like onions so having the smell of the onions rub off on the raisin bread wasn't enjoyable. Next came out a salad plate which was just a bed of romaine lettuce and one slice of tomato on the top. I was surprised when the steaks were served all alone on the plate. No garnish, no accents, nothing--just the steak sitting on a white plate. I have seen better presentations at a diner. This was a very poor presentation for what is supposed to be an upscale restaurant.
The steaks were good. My prime rib was very tender on the inside and char-grilled on the outside. Entrees came with choice of a baked potato or steak fries. We both got the baked potato which was served in its own dish with a side bowl of sour cream and chives. Potato was OK--nothing fancy.
I didn't like that the wait staff was clearing the table while my husband was still eating. I told them I wanted to take home the rest of my steak and they came back with it in a bag--a small paper bag that you would put a pastry in. There's my steak sitting in a bag. The steak sauce was leaking through the bag. Gives new meaning to the term doggy bag!
The bill came to $77 for one soft drink and two entrees. We didn't get appetizers, desserts or have alcohol. I really think this restaurant is way overpriced for the Monticello area and for what you get. It didn't even come with a vegetable. At one of the restaurants near there you get soup, salad, entree and dessert for $13.99 and the food presentation is way better.
This is mainly a seafood restaurant. Most of the appetizers are seafood. There was no chicken dishes on the menu. The dessert menu seemed uninteresting as most of it was frozen pies--nothing that appeared to be fresh or homemade. Clientele seems to be mostly older couples (senior citizens).
Went to this restaurant on a strong recommendation, and was very disappointed. Food was not fresh (both myself and my girlfriend ordered fish dishes, and both were not fresh, our side of brocolli had clearly been cooked from frozen), salad with meal was measly.
Wouldn't haven't been so bad, but we paid over $120 (excl tip) for 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 2 glasses of reasonable wine. VERY overpriced.
Would avoid this restaurant.
GREATEST STEAK HOUSE EVER!!!: I loved everthing in this place. My wife and I went here and the people were great they all were very friendly. The service was great and soo was the food. They have the best bread that you will ever taste. The steak was just right. I recommend this place to anyone who is in the area. 5 stars go there and you will love it!!
