My Time Warner cable service has been OK, and I have been a strong and loyal proponent of their service for over 20 years. The reasons why I stayed with them ($165/month), rather than switich to satellite, however, have diminished over the past three years: 1) RNEWS: It used to be an excellent 24 hour LOCAL news channel. It's no longer local - they outsourced their news production to Buffalo, and the weather reporting to Albany or Syracuse. They have moved several jobs out of Rochester, and I heard that there is another pending layoff in Rochester coming this year. 2) ON DEMAND: This used to be a huge advantage for cable over satellite, but DirectTV now has ON DEMAND service. I also augment my on-demand viewing with Netflix and Windows Media Center. 3) Local network channels (Fox, PBS, ABC, NBC and CBS.) Old news. The satellite carriers resolved that issue a few years ago, by picking up the local Rochester stations. 4) Image Quality. Satellite has higher bandwidth, so the HDTV picture is clearer than that of Cable. The Time Warner Digital Set Top boxes are terrible. The menu system is poor, and there is an unacceptable long lag when changing channels. I'm happy with my DirectTV Service, which I started this week.) I have better channel selections, local stations, better image quality, and I'm saving a lot of money every month. There was a time not too long ago when TWC was a great local asset. Today, they are just pulling money out of our regional economy, and adding to the ranks of our unemployed.
