My husband and I stopped by the Union Block Italian Bistro for a late lunch just this afternoon(Nov.1st '09). The restaurant was cozy and bright and each table was decorated with an inviting lit candle holder. Although the menu was simple we both found a meal we'd be happy with. My husband ordered the ravioli and I ordered a pizza topped with fresh tomatoes, artichokes and cheese topped with a salad of light greens. The food was beautifully presented but here is the problem--the tomato sauce that accompanied the ravioli was fresh and delectable but was loaded with slices of garlic(about 3 cloves of it!). The pizza was also beautifully presented on a wooden board, delicately sliced with the very fresh salad greens perched on top, but here is the problem--the pizza was heavily sprinkled with loads of freshly minced garlic(so small that it could not be removed). A previous reviewer of this restaurant suggested that this restaurant was as good as others they had visited in Rome, Italy!! Italians in Rome or anywhere in Italy use their garlic very sparingly and would never sprinkle garlic on fresh salad greens or load up a beautiful sauce with that amount of garlic. If the Bistro chef/cook needs to make a visit to Italy, he should do it soon before some restaurant patron of his bistro becomes overcome with garlic poisoning. A customer might be asked if he wants his entree with or without the offending veggie.....Anyway, the garlic truly ruined the experience.
My wife and I stopped on a Saturday night for supper. had to go to the bar before we could be seated and what a wonderful time in the cozy little bar. The bartender was freendly and made the wait not as long. We enjoyed the antipasto dish so much we decided to go back and have pizza and antipasto the next night. The pizza was as excellent as the antipasto.
What this restaurant lacks in size it more than makes up for in coziness, service, and great food. The pizza was outstanding and I loved the decor and atmosphere of the bar area downstairs. I had a couple great microbrews, and can't wait to enjoy some of the great wines I've heard about. I definitely recommend it.
