I am from Pgh but live in Northern VA, we have a much larger selection of food stores, our Whole Food's are great they buy local and I have purchased food that was rotten inside. I did not like the one in Pgh at all they need to step up and there is a problem with management I asked questions and did not recieve an answer. Phones ring of the hook no on never answers. Thank God I only visit once a month.
Does NOT Support Local Agriculture: Whole Foods Pittsburgh (WFP), while long overdue, has done an absolutely horrendous job in supporting local agriculture. I am a conscious consumer who cares deeply about the source of my food as I strive to support local family farms first! I have been inundated lately with AP articles giving praise to Whole Foodsâ commitment to support local agriculture and in particular a recent article about local milk. WFP has decided to turn their back on local agriculture and specifically local dairy farms. In doing research I found their âlocalâ milk to come from Harrisburg (a 4 hour drive) that first gets shipped to Maryland and then to Pittsburgh. That is neither local nor fresh and it certainly does not have a minimal impact on the environment. I choose Turnerâs (a local dairy) milk first because they have an exclusive arrangement with local family farms only. Upon further research I found out that all of Turnerâs farms are within 60 miles of their processing facility which is about 10 miles from the store. On top of all that, their milk is certified ârBST Freeâ! That means we can have local milk (literally 70 miles from the cow's udder to the shelf) from local family farms that is certified rBST Free. Letâs review one more time: Local milk, local family farms, no added hormones, and a minimal impact on the environment. Sounds like a no brainer; however, the more and more I request their milk at WFP and inquire about why I cannot buy it there the more I am given the cold shoulder or no response at all. I will not shop somewhere that does not support local farms, especially local dairy farms (having grown up on one). The dairy industry is integral to the economy of western PA and any store that turns their back on that does not have their priorities straight. If they refuse to stock local milk think about how many other local food items they refuse to offer. Iâll stick with the east End Food Co-op.
