Unreal venue. I just went for the Gaslight Anthem show, and was blown away. The acoustics and atmosphere were perfect. I could see it being even more incredible for someone under 21, because you don't find many clubs anymore ready to let you in. Alcohol was a little pricey, but whatev, it's a concert. Bathrooms....same way, hey, at least there were no port-a-johns. Parking....WORST EVA! But, you make sacrifices to see the bands you like, and when THEY like the venue....THAT is making a statement!
Mr. Smalls is a very small but pretty cool local to catch a band. My tastes run towards the more mellow bands so I can't speak for those who prefer something with a more rowdy crowd. I have never had any trouble the 50 or 60 times I have been here. I do find it to be loud, crowded, and smokey... but come on. It's a concert venue. The staff has always been helpful and polite. I have forgotten to close my tab there many a times (bad habit of mine) and was always able to get someone on the phone the very next morning. Parking blows. But welcome to Pittsburgh. Even if it weren't the only venue left standing I would still like it here. Don't let the review above mine turn you off. That girl has been there once. Check it out for yourself.
I will NEVER go back to that place: I have been going to concerts since I was a kid and this was the worst experience I have ever had. An adult friend of ours was accused of assulting the security guard because a bunch of teenagers were shoving us around and he was trying to help the ladies out of the crowd because it was way too wild and the staff was not regulating the teenage kids. There was barely standing room anywhere in the facility to watch the show. All the staff members with the exception of the door people were rude and did not do well at controlling the situations. There were fights inside and outside. I gave them a credit card to pay my bill and they lost it in the shuffle behind the bar. They next day when it was cancelled there was a 69 dollar charge on the card that had to be disputed with the bank. I still never rec'd the card back and was never able to get someone on the phone until weeks after this occured. The restroom doors were curtains that anyone could pull back and the bathrooms were absolutely repulsive. I have never been so disappointed about anything as I was with Mr. Smalls. I have been letting everyone know how horrible the experience was and if you have to travel to see your favorite band, do that before you go to Mr. Smalls in Millville
