| About: | The Smallman Street Deli has incorporated old fashioned decor with fresh food and service. Pipes, ducts and conduits are exposed throughout the interior, barrels serve as tables, and there are no chairs. If you can stand long enough, you will love the stacked deli sandwiches. There is no skimping on corned beef or ham at this place. Try the chicken soup with matzo balls and the potato pancakes. There is also a retail counter that stocks dozens of meats and cheeses, as well as steaks, veal and lamb. |

Great Lunch!: Smallman Street Deli has a wide variety of sandwich offerings. Their food is delicious and they do not skimp at all, always giving rather large, consistent servings. The staff is friendly and courteous every time. Their prices aren't too bad either. The restaurant has an old deli ambience to it as well. Personally, I recommend their fries (a meal in itself) and their oven baked turkey sandwiches...both are absolutely delicious!
Murray Ave. Squirrel Hill Gets the Real Deli Deal: The food is consistently the same - excellent. The portions are very generous and always fresh. We have always enjoyed what we ordered. They do give samples, such as tastes of their homemade soups. They take pride in their business. The only thing I would change (if they asked me) would be their decor. I would like the decor to be brighter. The floors are dark and the heating ducts in the ceiling need to be concealed. I can see the dust floating about. They need to be more consistent with the pickle trays. Some tables have them, others do not. They should also be covered or removed when clearing the tables. As they spray the tables, the pickles get a quick spray also. They listen to their diners, like changing the rye bread. It's much better now. We haven't found the perfect place yet, but Smallman is close to the Real Deli Deal.
