| About: | The Farnsworth House Inn is a Victorian bed and breakfast that offers gracious accommodations and maybe even a little scare. Some people believe that a ghostly visitor still walks the halls at night. A fine dining restaurant that serves period fare, bookstore, and a tavern where keepers are well versed in the language of the Civil War and enjoy discussing it at length are available. The Mourning Theatre also presents dramatic ghost stories. A full country breakfast is served each morning. |

I think that there is a little confusion as far as the Farnsworth House...there are a few different aspects. The Farnsworth house has a restaurant, a pub, a B&B, and a bookstore.
The restaurant back in the late 80s and early 90s was "the place" in Gettysburg. This culminated with the pub in the back being the unofficial 2nd home for the cast, crew, and reenactors in 1992 for the "Killer Angels" ("Gettysburg"). A few years after this heyday, the service fell off in the restaurant.
It seemed that after they had carved out their niche and earned their reputation, the service began a steady deline right up into the mid 2000s. The service was so poor about 2004, that my wife and I said that we would not return.
This was ashame since the food has never been the issue. The game pie that is their signature dish was/is truly a great meal. All meals start off with a relish dish that consists of pickled watermelon rinds and various other appetizing choices. You also get a few different kinds of fresh bread (Jennie Wade and Spoon).
After a few years, we decided to return. We are glad that we did. The poor service, which I chalked up to younger, inexperienced staff has been corrected. I have no problem going back there at all nowadays.
Some of the complaints that I have read on here are centered around the B&B and the friendliness of the the staff in the bookstore. I have never stayed at the B&B, so I will not comment on that aspect. But I do go into the bookstore several times a year. ( In my opinion, it is the best bookstore in town relating to regimental histories and Gettysburg.) There are a couple of "older" women who work there and in all of the times that I have seen them interact with customers, whether buying books, making reservations, or checking into the B&B, I have seen them nothing but pleasant.
***EDIT***As of a short time ago, the book store is closed. They have turned the area where the bookstore used to be into a "ghost tour office". They told me personally that this was just a temporary inconvenience and that the books are all packed away "in the back", whatever that means. A real shame...just another sellout to the ridiculous ghost tour industry that is taking over the town.***
If you have not been to the Farnsworth House for dinner, it is well worth going to. This was the 1st place that I can remember that went all out with the 19th century atmosphere...from the wait staff, the food choices, the decorum inside, etc. The pub in the back is more of sandwich and lunch place than a place where you would want to have a nice dinner.
Good Place: If only i could express how great this place was! THe food was AMAZING if you like to be scared of Ghosts you will at this place it scared me and my husband very well! Infact we took a picture of it and the ghosht showed up! So if you are going to Gettysburg stay at the Farnsworth House Inn, You'll love it!
The Farnsworth House is one of the nicest non-chain lodgings we've visited. The rooms are beautifully decorated, the beds are comfortable, and everything from dining to shopping is available in the same location. The restaurant and tavern are the as good as any other in town. If we could change anything, it would be two points: 1) Play down the ghost stories... it made sleep difficult. 2) Keep the tavern open (at least for drinks) a little later. 8:30 is too early for any bar to close.

A history of reviews from 2007 through February indicates a problem. All reviews since this one are signicantly negative. It seems the tide turned in mid-2008 from good to terrible. All outside dining was good, but the majority and everything since late 2008 have been discouraging to horrifying. Seems the service is very very bad and very very slow and unprofessional. I made a reservation for a small group for early May 2009 and now I am considering canceling it in fear I would ruin the weekend for my group. Even this reviewer acknowledged erratic and very bad service. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM ? IS it still bad or have the problems been solved ?
I have not been in the restaurant in a few months, but it seemed that the service issues had been solved going back to last November (2008). The service that I was referring to was in the restaurant, where I think most of the others are commenting on the B and B. There was a time when they "did not try as hard" as when they were trying to build their niche and earn their reputation. Those service issues, as far as I'm concerned from the times that I have been there in the last couple of years has been solved. And, like I have said, the food has never been the issue. You wont be disappointed with that aspect. It is true, that if you are going to stay at the B and B, your check-in is at the bookstore. (I go to that bookstore several times a year...it, in my opinion, is the best bookstore in town...with a huge selection of regimental histories.) There are a couple of "older" women who work there and they may not be the quickest at times. But, I have never seen them be rude or unfriendly to anyone buying a book, asking a question, taking a reservation, or checking someone in at the B and B.
