About:Pioneer Tunnel is a horizontal drift mine with a level tunnel that runs 1,800 feet straight into the side of the Mahanoy Mountain. Pulled by a battery-operated mine motor, the open mine cars takes you on a 35-minute tour of how coal is mined, which the PA Travel Industry Advisory Council has named \"one of the top 10 tourist attractions in the State of Pennsylvania.\"

    My family enjoyed the coal mine tour quite a bit. Remember to take a jacket, and be warned that you will be dripped on! I would also wear shoes, not flip flops or sandals. The train ride, however, was short and seemed way overpriced. You didn't really see much at all. Little kids might like it just because it's a train though. The facilities were very nice, there were some picnic areas and everyone there was wonderful to deal with.
