This is truly one of my favorite restaurants. The menu is seasonal and exquisite.. The menu pricing is mid-range. There is always a dish to suit your tastes and be sure to indulge with appetizers. I have never been disappointed. The best thing about Antelao is the quaint personal service. Make your reservations early in the day as the seating is very limited.
Open thurs - sun.
Antelaos is a gem located in the Delaware Water Gap area, and right over the bridge from NJ! It was recommended to us by the owners/inn keepers at The Gatehouse Country Inn (also an amazing place to stay, which is minutes from the restaurant. We received a warm welcome and were seated at at cozy table for two. The decor is bright and cheerful - the room was filled with sunlight. It's rare to read a menu that has so many fabulous sounding selections, and the specials were equally yummy sounding.
Our server (who I later found out was Elvi, one of the owners, along with the brilliant and creative chef who is her husband) was a true delight. Her descriptions of the food made it difficult to decide on what to order, but we finally did: corn chowder that was sweet from the freshly picked corn, and made with a light broth (not the usual heavy chowder), and the garlic flan over grilled eggplant and a roasted red pepper sauce...oh, my...it was heavenly!!! A salad of mixed grees is included and served with homemade dressings - we had the creamy dill and blue cheese, both excellent.
My entree was one of the specials: a generous portion of tender & moist haddock & scallops in a luscious shrimp sauce with veggies sauteed in lime cilantro butter (I think), and my husband had Chicken Antelao: breast of chicken roulade, with chicken forcemeat (thigh meat), Romano cheese and dried mushrooms, served with polenta and Marinara sauce...it was amazing and different from any chicken dish offered anywhere else.
We were too full for dessert, but after hearing what was offered we were sorry we hadn't left room. As we had our coffee & tea we saw the desserts being brought to other tables and with each bite people saying mmmmmmmmmm......over and over again. Next time we'll plan better.
As for the service, it could not have been better. Our water was refilled often, as was the tasty iced tea. The young man who assisted Elvi was right on top of anything we requested. We did not know the area and asked Elvi if she knew of any farm markets in the area and not only did she suggest a place for us to visit on the way home, but she wrote down the name with directions. After dinner we asked if she might suggest someplace in the area to do something fun and she directed us to a free concert a block away.
All in all, this place is a true find and one that we can't wait to return to. Next time we'll bring some friends so they can have one of the most enjoyable meals of their lives.
Final notes...when they brought the check to the table they also brought us a little white bag filled with the fresh crusty dinner rolls we hadn't eaten. What a perfect little treat to bring home. If we had a dinner this amazing in any major city, I think the final bill would have been much higher - the prices could not have been more reasonable. Also, Antelao is a non-smoking and non-cellphone restaurant.
Our Water Gap Gem: The best there is.
