I grew up eating in the great pizza places in Old Forge that are still owned and run by the same families 40-60 years later. My all time favorite is Ghigiarelli's.
The place has not changed much in the 40 plus years that I am going there. I always say that when you walk in the front door its 2009, by the time you reach the dining room its 1949. And that's a good thing.
The menu is no-frills. Pizza, pasta, tripe and sofritto. Whenever I come here I always start with a dish of Sofritto. Granted this may not be for everyone but I love it. Very hard to find outside of Old Forge. Veal hearts boiled then cubed. Saute in olive oil with a splash of red wine vinegar. Salt, pepper and rosemary.
Then comes the pizza. Fresh dough, light and crispy. The sauce is sweet and spicy at the same time. The cheese mixture blends in perfectly. There is a lot of good pizza in Old Forge, but this is the best!!!
Awful...just Awful: I have no idea how Old Forge can claim to be "The Pizza Capitol of the World." Granted, they may have plenty of pizza restaurants, but shouldn't at least one of them have good pizza before they claim they are the pizza capitol.
I think Ghigiarelli's is typical of "Old Forge Style Pizza." It reminds me of the pizza we were served in elementry school. The crust is saturated with oil and baked crispy. The sauce is flavorless and leaves much to be desired. I can't tell you how much I was turned off by this pizza.
The restaurant itself was nothing special...some old rickety tables and chairs and the wait staff acted as though they were doing you a favor by letting you eat there. Really...this was one of my worst dining experiences in NEPA. If we hadn't been with our friends when we ate here, the whole night would have been a disaster.

Ed, I suppose it's an acquired taste, those of us that grew up eating Pizza from Old Forge and Wyoming Valley. Don't buy pizza anywhere else but Chicago. I fly in from Dallas Texas and the first place we go is to Old Forge(Revellos- Ghigiarellis) thick square pizza served on a cafeteria tray...or Exeter(near Pittston) to Sabatini's( VERY thin and crispy round and AWESOME) there are others that kick the heck out of pizza any where else in this USA. It is possible you got pizza there on a bad night.....as I have had some bad pizza's in Old Forge, but generally it is really good. Grazi and Mangia, Dave K. Ed, Ghigiarellis is the best pizza in the area not just Old Forge. The crust is crisp and not oily at all and the sauce is made with whole crushed tomatoes not pizza sauce from a can. So get your facts straight before you post such a stupid and incorrect opinion of a business that has been around since 1920.
