After living in Aston for many years, I finally got around to trying out Hennessy's Restaurant on Pennell Road. I had been to the Hennessy's out on MacDade Boulevard many years ago and enjoyed it, and the one in Aston was equally good. It had an Irish pub decor with a lively (but not overbearing) bar area, with a seperate dining area with old oak tables and chairs. It was a varied menu with some traditional Irish American fare, but mostly an American bent, including seafood, steaks, veal and pasta. The prices were very reasonable for the portions, and the food was outstanding. Highly recommended!

We had dinner with another couple here 4/05/08. We arrived earlier than they did and had to wait, but were forced to go outside because of the grossly smokey bar. (PA, when in heck are you going to go smoke free??)This might be a problem in the wintertime when it is too cold to do this, but I will tell you that if we had not been meeting another couple we would not have stayed, it was that smelly. Onto the dining room and the food. Smallish room, wooden chairs, tables without cloths, wooden and with cigarette burns in them. The waiter came to get drink orders, bread was served with roast peppers (VERY tasty, but tiny bread serving for 4 adults). We had soup that was either snapper or chowder--my husband's bowl was half full, not sure why so skimpy, but tasty. The entrees were large and delicious. Risotto was a choice of side dish--don't order it, it is gummy and pasty, but the veggies were firm and tasty. The dish that is filet with crabmeat and a light sauce was delicious--but lukewarm, not piping hot and I did not mention or send it back to warm it; two others had strip steak with mushrooms with side of shrimp and crabmeat. As my husband send "good, but not 'fine dining' good but worth the price. Another had the swordfish which I got to sample and it was very good. The waiter was amiable, but at times seemed to disappear. We had coffee and dessert and were not offered a refill at all. We had the ice cream for dessert which was described as hazelnut ice cream covered in chocolate, which was a great ending to the meal, smallish but no one would want it any larger. The bill came and with tip we split a $160 tab. This included a total of 5 drinks and desserts for 4, no appetizers. Would I go again? Maybe, if it becomes smoke free. I think these places need to either focus on being a bar or a restaurant, but not split it down the middle. It is a family atmosphere with alot of kids, which makes me say all the more LOSE the smoke, but this will impace the bar biz, I am sure.

PA smoke free as of Sept. 11th. If they have 20% or more food sales must be smoke free. I am going here tomorrow and hope it is following the law.
