I love this place! It's nice and cozy! Sometimes people come and play piano. It is a beautiful coffee shop with a great personnel! I go there every week at least once just to get some "me time" and enjoy a beautiful atmosphere!
At first glance, the place is extremely spacious, yet feels cozy with its homey/country decor. Although the place was not by any means filthy, I did have a hard time finding a table that had been wiped sufficiently clean (to put down some paperwork) - and this was only 9 am. I asked the woman behind the counter if they prepared a Chai tea, and she said yes. What I got appeared to be a Chai latte. It was good, but milky latte all the way!
After a few minutes, it was clear that the place was freezing - the doors open straight into the place with no barrier to the cold winter air. Everytime someone opened the door- often- more cold air came in- many customers kept their coats on while seated.
Lastly, on my way out, I used the washroom and discovered that there was no soap being dispensed. So, I walked up to the back counter (the front counter where you ordered had over 10 people in line (it might be a good idea to hire more people for the lunch rush?!), and politely notified the only other front employee about the soap and the temperature. She replied that the "soap always gets clogged up" (then fix or replace it- duh?! this is a health violation, people!) and that the "heating system doesn't circulate the air very well to that half" of the cafe where I was seated (again, fix it or get space heaters- it was in the 50's!!!).
This place has great potential, but there are clearly some issues that need tending to.
You will be doing them a great service if you never return. High-maintenace, highly-critical customers like yourself are never happy and the bane of all businesses. I own a coffee house in NJ and Sugar & Cream is a wonderful place...everything a local coffe house should be. Are there imperfect moments and missed opportunities? Sure. But you also get a more personal atmosphere, a better product and no chain hype. It's not easy. I'm sure you've never attempted it. People like you are better off going to some sterile chain, where you can email corporate about your awful experience.
Cozy and clean. The coffee is terrific and the place is very kid friendly - books for little people located at kid-level height beneath the magazine stand. Tasty sandwiches, soups, smoothies and other light food.
