Hikaru always provide fresh and good food, if you don't want to wait too long, call for weekend reservation.
To enjoy better service, weekdays will be your better choice.
Philadelphia's best for more than 2 decades: When I visit a Japanese restaurant, I don't go to see tricks. I go to enjoy the food. Having eaten in hundreds of Japanese places all over, including New York, Boston and Tokyo, I find myself comparing Hikaru to the best anywhere. The ambience is true Japanese, as are the staff, service style and recipes. You will not find fresher, better quality sushi anywhere in the five-county area, and if you prefer the unusual types of sushi, contrasted with the everyday kinds of fish you can find anywhere, Hikaru is your place.
Management is always visible, yet restrained. The sushi chefs are pleasant, skillful, and ready to serve. The beer is cold, and your bottle seems to always have enough left in it. The owner is among the very first to serve Japanese food in Philadelphia, and there are many reasons he has lasted as long as he has - people swear by these restaurants.
Yes, there are many Japanese restaurants in the Philadelphia area now, some with big names attached to them. Some with elaborate decor and imposing entrances. Some with weekly specials. Me? I'll take the one that's been the best since the day its doors opened over 20 years ago. I'll take Hikaru.
Sushi YES, tepan-yaki NO!: All Japanese steak houses are the same, right? WRONG! I was a bit dissapointed with my experience at Hikaru in Manayunk. We chose to get both tepan-yaki AND sushi. First of all, our chef did not do any tricks and was quite slow; however, to his credit, I liked him a whole lot because of his pleasant and respectful demeanor. The food was bland and even the miso had a different taste to it. My Boston sushi roll was fantastic, though and so was the beef-wrapped scallion (forgot what it's called). So if you're enjoying the cool city vibe in Manayunk and are in the mood for Japanese, get the sushi, but not the tepan-yaki!
