loved it: Great service great food good drinks!
so close you can touch it: while venues like the electric factory or the tla may bring bigger name bands to philly, and smaller venues may attract more esoteric acts, the north star bar is unique in it's approach to live music. most bars (the pontiac grille, for example) will throw the band on to a tiny "stage" if not simply leave a spot cleared on the floor for the performers and larger venues keep fans separated from the band with barricades and bouncers. a great band will be able to put on a great show regardless of these venue-specific shortcomings. however, a great band is that much more enjoyable when you can not only see the band perform from anywhere in the bar, but you can literally touch the band (or might have the band touch you) if you happen to be leaning against the stage. all the fun of singing along with the band into a mic suddenly thrust in front of you or being pulled up on-stage still thrives at the north star bar.
in addition, the prices for food and drink aren't the laughably overpriced offerings typical of the trocadero or electric factory. ticket prices are reasonable, and the bartenders are fairly quick to serve, considering the volume of people a good show will attract. while the food isn't exotic or surprising, it is genuinely delicious, and will not dissapoint.
still, the main reason to visit the north star bar is to see a band. no where else is the band so visible, so close, or accessible. at the merchandise tables after playing their set, one can typically find the performers chatting happily with fans as they sell t-shirts, cd's and stickers.
in fact, the only real problem with the bar its self is the distance on has to travel in order to visit. unless you live in the art museum area, finding the bar after your search for parking may be a daunting task. but, these are small concerns when weighed against the greater experience to be had within the walls of the north star bar.
Great Venue: Wonderful place to see a show, not a bad seat in the house, great bands great beer lots of fun
