Exceptional! Year round, this is a fantastic place to visit. There's something for everyone! I've visited gardens all over the world, and none have compared to Longwoods. A magical place for anyone who enjoys gardening, plants and flowers. A Disneyland for gardeners. Constantly changing and improving, too. I'm really impressed with how well kept this place is. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great events offerings. Only have good things to say.

Longwood Gardens is the most beautiful botanical garden I've ever seen and I never seem to get enough of it. I've probably been there over a 100 times so far which was easy to do since I grew up fairly close. But now that I live across the country, I still make the effort to visit whenever in the area.

The place is huge - probably more than anyone can do in one day without moving too fast. Longwood is a place to relax so if coming from out of the area, take 2 days to cover it all and take your time and DEFINATELY see the evening water fountain show timed to music. Its really amazing.

The highlights of Longwood are th Italian water gardens. There are dozens of water pools with little whimsical statues shooting water out of their mouths, water cascading down stairs, waterfalls in a lush green setting. The closest thing you can get to a real Italian water garden in this country. The sound of the water has always been so soothing to me. Sit in the shade and enjoy! Nearby is also a large fish pond with orange carp. I used to feed them crumbs when I was a boy. There is another smaller pond with bullfrogs. If you are lucky enough you may spot it!

The conservatory is also amazing. A series of HUGE indoor greenhouses with beautiful displays of rare plants, indoor waterfalls, etc. My favorite is what I always called the "jungle room". A pathway desends from the tops of the tropical cannopy down into forest.

There is also a cactus room, orchid room and many others.

I love going in here in the winter to be surround by the warm lush greenery and the smell is intoxicating. They generally spruce the main rooms up in Christmas themes with a giant decorated tree and more pointsetta plants than you'll probably ever see. On certain nights they have concerts in the conservatory too. Lastly, it worth driving around the parking lot at night during the holidays as they puts christmas lights on dozens of large trees.

My daughters favorite area is the bell tower and waterfall. You used to be able to ascent to the very top and see the actual bells but this is now closed. The stone spiral staircase to the second level is still enchanting for a child.

So much more to see than I've mentioned. The flower arrangements, old growth and rare trees and plants make this a really special place.

They do have a restaurant which is actually quite good. There is a sit down restaurant (not cheap) and a cafeteria where they have sandwiches, soups, salads, grill food, etc.

A must see. If in the area longer, the Brandywine River Museum of art is a must see too. It is the permanent home of most of the Wyeth family masterpieces. Andrew Wyeth actually lives down the road.
