My daughter danced with the conservatory for 2 years. She loved the classes, and enjoyed dancing in the end of the year recital. After 2 years, the days leading up to the recital, my daughter (who is 5) became very sick. She had been to the doctor, was on antibiotic, but the day of the recital continued with her symptoms (fever, enlarged tonsils, etc.). She saw the doctor the morning of the rectial (for the second time in three days), and I was advised that she absolutely could not dance for fear that she would get the other children sick (she had a blood test that morning which later determined that she had mono). I made a number of phone calls and emails to the conservatory to let them know that my daughter would not be dancing due to her illness and to see if we could get any of our money back for the recital. I even called the hotel that was going to be hosting the event in the hopes of getting a hold of someone. Around 7:30 that night, I finally got a phone call from the owner of the conservatory; the recital started at 5:30. She stated that she could do nothing about the money that I put out for the dinner.
Be aware; if you participate in this school, you will have to pay between $60-$80 for the recital outfit (which is typical for any dance school), and $40 per ticket for the actual recital (which includes a mediocre dinner). All said and done, I was out $70 for her outfit, and $160 for four tickets to the recital. I am well aware that the school cannot refund money every time an issue occurs, however, I do feel that they should allow for some stipulations. The whole situation left a bad taste in my mouth; no only was I very worried about my sick little girl, but then I essentially flushed a good deal of money down the toilet. I was upset about the whole situation. We are now looking into other dance schools.
I know that there are other parents who have and will comment on my post and state that these kinds of sitations happen and that when you sign up for the recital, it states that you cannot get your money back. That is fine, however, I just wanted to make other parents aware of the stipulations that go along with this school and that if an emergency occurs, do not expect any compensation.
I have been sending my daughters to COMAD for five years now and have been completely satisfied with their lessons, scheduling, well-run and organized recitals, overall level of professionalism, and the quality of the teachers. I do run into parents over the years occassionly that have complained about certain problems as listed from other comments, but have never seen any problem that has not been corrected promply and properly. I do agree that the formal recital is long, but the younger children do not have to stay until the end and you have the option of leaving after they perform. I like having the evening out and the long recital is enjoyable as I can view all the many, many age-groups, dance team performances, and the huge variety of dance-types offered at this school.
Currenly 3 of my daughters take classes: ages 3, 8, & 10. The school not only teaches dance instruction in a fun atmosphere, but provides my girls with confidence, self-disipline, and appreciatation of the arts. Some of the special points that impress me are their Halloween costume party dance class, the teachers calling in the parents at the ending of the class to watch their children perform, inviting my girls to watch other classes of older girls to learn and inspire them, choosing appropriate and fun music for the recital, excellent recital themes each year (Sussical, High School Musical, Disney Fantasmic), professional photograpy at the informal, the option of the families attending the informal recital (free and better for older relatives that cannot sit through the longer recital) or a formal dinner-theater type recital every year. I hope that my daughters stay with them for a long time!
The Conservatory of Music and Dance provided my children with quality teachers who were not only professional but very sincere in their love for the students. The old saying is "You get what you pay for." A previous comment about cost was an 18.00 recital fee. We were able to attend an informal recital duplicating the dinner recital free of charge. The recital fee only covered the cost of the auditorium rental as was stated in papers we received. The dinner recital was so popular that the majority of the room was filled. If the recital was long and boring, the recital would not be close to a sellout. Each year I attended these shows(8 years), the efforts and professionalism was beyond the applause.

In defense of COMAD,just like any banquet, dinner theater performance,or concert once reservations are made and paid for, normally you cannot be refunded. The ticket ordering envelope does state it is non-refundable. And, you do not have to attend the formal - or at least not have to buy 4 tickets. There is a FREE informal recital also held at a high school auditorium than any family members can attend - no reservations. The cost of the outfit is very normal/reasonable for any dance, gymnastics, theater, cheerleading, colorguard, twirling team. I think that COMAD had a wonderful professional experienced staff and instructional variety of programs, and if your daughter enjoyed it and you were happy with her learning to dance, it is a shame that you pulled her out of it over not getting a refund over something that you agreed that was non-refundable. Kids get sick and life happens. COMAD has 3 studios, many recitals, hundreds of students. They cannot be expected to refund money every time someone is sick and need to have an enforced policy in place.
