Although West Chester may have lost its beloved Warner Theater years ago, it's managed to hold onto its other precious gem of Americana known as the DK Diner.
With its original steel structure, this diner is guaranteed to please your need for a stroll into the past as well as a filling & comforting, albeit not-so-heart-healthy, breakfast (and let's be honest...aren't those the best kind?) The manager, sous chef, and head waitress have been there for over 50 years collectively.
If you're lucky enough to get there at the right times of the day you'll be sure to encounter the "regulars" who have been patrons of the DK Diner for decades. Pay attention and you'll see the attentive wait staff serve these customers without bothering to ask what they are having today....because they have already committed their orders to memory.
If you want the total DK experience, I recommend visiting between 6 -7 am (M-F). Is that un-godly hour is too early for you couch potatoes? Then stop by for a late lunch around 1pm (M-F) and you'll still get a taste of what is so sacred about this greasy spoon.
If you're really lucky you'll witness one of the head chef/manager's legendary tantrums. He's not only known for his un-matched skills in running a kitchen but, more importantly, for verbally abusing the wait staff and grumpily denying the customers' special requests. His management style brings the long-forgotten TV sit-com line "Mel, kiss my grits" immediately back into consciousness.
As for the menu, I strongly suggest the creamed chipped beef (over home fries with toast on the side) but, if you are not an early bird and they have served the last helping of this diner delicacy, then I advise you to opt for a couple banana-chocolate chip pancakes or the cinnamon bun french toast. Don't forget the bacon...it's always crisp to perfection. I promise you won't be disappointed.
And don't forget to tip your waitress well. All that guff from the cook tends to make the girls a lil' grumpy :)
Cool Diner: Practically a landmark in West Chester; this is "the place" for breakfast during the weekend.
