We had the calamari, mussels and I had the Tuna as an entree. I will cover each dish. First though, let me say that the inside was above average and the service was good.
Calamari: overcooked, not sure why most people can't cook calamari properly but they can't and often overcook it and make it "chewy", as was the case here and the breading was flavorless (just had grease taste), there were two dipping sauces, the aoili was nothing special; however the sweet chili sauce was very good, overall, I've had much better calamri for less money
Mussels: other than one of my mussels having an extremely foul odor (probably bad, I didn't eat it), they were very good for a tapas
Tuna: The Entree. The piece of Tuna was nice not one of those flat steaks, it was nice and thick and cooked very well (I ordered it rare, and it was slight seared on both sides). The texture of the rice (which appeared to be pan fried as a cake on both sides, much like you might get hash browns) was good, I really liked this aspect of the dish. Unfortunately, most of the dish was overpowered by the bowl of soy sauce that everything was sitting in. This sauce was supposed to be pineapple ponzu, which it was NOT, it was basically soy sauce, so anytime I ate anything I simply couldn't get paste all the salt of the soy suace, which really spoiled the dish. The baby vegetables were nothing special and the "wasabi" cream wasn't very "wasabi".
Note also that my wife had the chilean sea bass and felt pretty "blah" about the dish. She also thought the calamari was overcooked, which it was.
Normally, I would give them an average rating of 3/5 stars; however, their high price increases expectations and fall significantly flat, so I have to give them a 2.
Overall, stay away. For the price of this place the food should be a lot better, in fact, I have had much better food for less in the same area (Wilmington/Newark), you just have to look around a little.
This place benefits from the fact that it is in Wilmington, DE. If this was in a bigger city this place would not make it at all. People put up with their high prices because they don't have much competition in the same area (downtown Wilmington). People obviuosly go here to be seen not to enjoy the food. This is the classic big fish, small pond except that the big fish only looks good but tastes very plain.
Wilmington's best: If you live in in Wilmington (or nearby) - Deep Blue is a must for a romantic date, special night out, or an afterwork drink. This is the only place where my husband, who does not generally eat seafood, agrees to go without hesitation, and actually orders seafood. As far as ambiance goes, it is great, but I do wish they would do something about the drop tile sealing that gives and otherwise sophisticated place a bit of s cheesy feel.
