Why is this place in business? An overpriced abortion of what might have been a unique local business. Grotesque food and with operating hours which leave many of what few customers they have scratching their heads at the locked doors.
Some of the most unpleasant, un-fresh food I have ever tasted in my life, and this is after two tries. Nothing about this place is remotely Cajun; I say that as a bonafide Cajun myself, born and raised in the Acadiana region of (south) Louisiana. An example of two of their menu items are things called "Jack Daniels Chicken" and "Tortellini de la Casa". HUH? Come again? Their "Chicken & Shrimp Creole" is some confused mishmosh slop with stale, dried chicken bits and what appear to be Chinese shrimp with one or two whole crawfish which appear to have been laying out on the counter for hours; the food equivalent of multiple personality disorder.
Reading their website, the owner decided on the name of the place from an old 1980s movie. Well, might as well since judging from the food and the business model, he has never worked in, lived near nor had the pleasure of enjoying the food of Louisiana or any restaurant with normal business hours and good food.
What's most annoying about this place are the hours. The website will tell you they're open from about noon through 1a.m.. However, it took us THREE attempts to eat at this place before we could ever discover it opened.
A truly horrible experience not for the serious or casual diner or even those dieing from starvation. Poor focus on maintaining customer trust. The owner needs to shutter the place or sell it off before he embarrasses himself or his family even more.
The Blue Parrot is a hidden gem amist Italian and Mexican restaurants near Union and Lincoln St. in Wilmington. It has a New Orleans theme, decorated with festive mardi gras masks, beads, neon signs and blues music. (There is also a live band each night, which we didn't stay for) They specialized in a mixed drink called a hurricane, which was very tasty and had just enough liquor in it. For our appetizer, we had a full order of shrimp and crab nachos which was piled high with seafood, melted cheese, and homemade salsa. DELICIOUS!! My main course was a turkey panini, which was made with fresh turkey, just the right amount of veggies, and fresh bread. It was served with homeade crispy potatoe chips. They were a little too salty, but very delicious. The waitress was less than professional, but the atmosphere, food, and drink was great and I would definitely reccommend this place to any one of my friends!
We had a small going away party for a coworker at this establishment on 8/14/07 The meals were brought out one at a time with several meals having been totally omitted (so they were much later than the others because they were never cooked). I ordered the gumbo and, when it finally arrived (after reminding the waiter that I had also ordered a meal) I can only describe it as horrible. The meat was so over cooked that it melted in my mouth making it impossible to tell one meat from another. The buggish seafood placed on the top was still frozen. I made the waiter aware but I was offered no apology by the staff nor was my barely eaten meal noted (even after I brought it to the waiters attention). At the least I had expected management to apologize for the horrible meal, maybe offer me something less ruinous as a replacement. I received nothing but a rotten taste in my mouth. Needless to say we left the restaurant ASAP and did not stay to drink and enjoy the band (which wasn't New Orleans style as promised) because we had been treated so shabbily.
