| About: | Capitol City Brewing Company opened its doors in 1992 as the first brew pub in Washington DC since prohibition. This location is housed in the historic Postal Square Building next to Union Station. The building served as the Federal City Post Office from 1911 until 1986. We have a massive in house brewery which allows for all our beers to be made on site. These wonderful selections of our beers have gone on to win The Great American Beer Festival Awards: Capital Kolsch, Amber Waves Ale, Fuel and Honey Larger. We are also a great site for private events, our elegant private room was once the Post Master Generals office. |

Leave your appetite at home: Eat before you arrive, then enjoy some good beer. This place typically has several to choose from depending on the season and how busy they have been. I recommend the Hefeweisen. Do not order anything to eat beyond some nachos or small appetizers--you will be dissapointed. The menu reads well, but the food is inevitably bland, greasy, or both. This is a good place to relax with friends and watch the game. This is not the place for the kids, the in-laws, or the first date.
Good beer, decent bar food: What do I mean by "decent bar food?" I mean the hummus plate was good and I would imagine some of the other appetizer plates might be decent. The meals? Bad news. Nice names, mediocre food.
Service is questionable at the best of times. The first time we went there, the bartender told us to go ahead and sit down...where we were ignored for about ten minutes. The waitress who eventually responded to our hails informed us firstly that the actual waitress for our section had just quit...and secondly that we couldn't sit down without going through the hostess (despite what the bartender had told us).
The second time we went (I know...you're asking if we're gluttons for punishment. It was late. The restaurants at Union Station were closed. The beer is good). The restaurant was largely empty...except for the huge line forming in front of the (abandoned) host station.
Now that all of the negatives are out in the open (bad service, mediocre food), I can highlight CCBC's strength once again. Great 'home-brewed' beer. I'd be willing to stop by just to have a beer if I was in the neighborhood...and it's that simple point that lifts the joint from 2 stars to 3.
