I have dined just about everywhere in this city and all the best restaurants in all the foreign cities I have visited over the years. With the exception of "El Bulli" in Catalonia,Spain and "Astrid & Gaston" in Lima, Peru, there isn't a restaurant that can compare with the level of cuisine and the most important "Fun Factor" that this restaurant offers. We are very lucky to have Michel Richard in our area and should be thankful that he has made the Metro area his home. I don't usually write or make any positive/negative comments about anywhere I choose to dine, but I read the review of Mr.Brunch and I can't help but believe that he may have gone into "La Madelaine" around the corner and thought that he was in Citronelle.
Perhaps the best DC restaurant in which I have dined in many years. The inventive menu is something rarely seen in these parts. I would have not even thought of making a tart covered with a puree of snails. Quite a delightful appetizer. If you like game prepared with flair accompanied by exceptional wines, this is the place. The dining area is rather dark and just a bit cramped for my taste, but many table provide you with a theater-like view into the kitchen. That's always entertaining if you don't have the right crowd for some good people watching. Service in impeccable. Located right off of M Street in Georgetown, you need not got deep into the city to experience Citronelle. Valet parking is a must if you drive. Citronelle also has a very well stocked bar especially if you like single malt. I suggest getting there just a bit earlier in the evening and having a drink. This is the type of dining experience that you want to ease into. No need to rush. Reservations are a must as is respectable attire. You're not at Olive Garden for Pete's sake!
I just can't give this "upscale" restaurant a good or excellent rating, and I really want to. I went for dinner with friends. It simply does not live up to the hype and I go to a ton of fine dining restaurants all over the country. The atmosphere was minimalist, but not impressive. The food was average to me, nothing hopped out. The service was spotty, usually average and at one point rude (this is why this place gets a "poor", otherwise it would have gotten an "average" rating. For an upscale restaurant, I don't recommend this place. If you want to go out with friends and you live in DC, then yes, go there to cross it off your list, but don't expect good service. If you want to impress a date, or go out for a special occassion, no way. If you're visiting DC and want to go to a nice place, I would not go here and you can find better places for the price range. For some reason, the DC area people are very loyal to this place. I think it is way overrated.
