The peach cobbler and cheese cake taste like a product from a grocery store, and not from scratch or homemade. My jambalaya was luke warm, the crab was cold and the dish was served on a plate. The positive-- I loved the fried green tomatoes, corn bread sticks and organic grits. The waiteress and waiter who served us were friendly and courtesy. The host was not.
What a terrible experience. I stopped in there last night for a to go order. I ordered the she-crab soup, country fried steak, and pecan pie. The receipt that the bartender handed me said "chick fixe" - I asked her if this was the country fried steak and she assured me that it was. When they handed me my order, I noticed there was no pie in there, so they had to go get it. I also noticed there was no plasticware in there, so they had to get that for me as well.
I got back to the hotel room and sure enough, my order was wrong and I had the fried chicken in there. I would have noticed it at the restaurant except that, with the clear top, the container seemed to hold the correct item - both items would have been fried and look similar. The fried chicken would have been fine, except that it was perhaps the driest chicken I've ever eaten. A large portion of it was completely inedible and had to be thrown away.
On the plus side, the pie was good.
I certainly wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone.
I was really looking forward to my first experience at Georgia Brown's. From their website menu, to the reviews I read, I felt this would definitely be a meal to remember.
WELL, DISAPPOINTMENT WOULD BETTER DESCRIBE MY EXPERIENCE. The decor of the restaurant pulls you in, making you believe GB will live up to all the hype. But, don't be fooled. Upon seating, the waiter appeared to take our drink orders. I asked for water, at which time, he proceeded to ask, "just plain tap water?" I'm sorry, but isn't it customary for restaurants to provide water to patrons, tap or otherwise? So, I asked for other options, at which time, he begins his sales pitch. Suffice it to say, I was sold a $6 bottle of warm water....was never offered a glass of ice either - - that may have been an additional $1, I'm guessing. The waiter then brings over a plate of "bread" consisting of two cold, hard biscuits and two corn muffins. Neither of which impressed me.
So far, GB is not living up to all the hype. We order an appetizer (catfish fingers), and I must say they were delicious, albeit one of the smallest portioned appetizers I've ever received. Our entrees arrived, mine being the braised short ribs adn his the salmon, each atop a mound of grits. The salmon was much overcooked (and both me and my partner like our fish cooked thoroughly, but we still thought it was dry). The braised ribs lacked flavor. As for the "mound of grits,"...this is aptly stated, because these grits were hard and lumpy. The mouth feel of the grits was just disgusting. My friend's grits had a lump the size of a golf ball in them. I grew up in the south and know what good grits are, and these failed miserably. In fact, any real southerner would be ashamed to serve these grits.
Overall, we spent in excess of $100 for an appetizer, two entrees and a bottled water. And, we are people who would spend ten times more for a GOOD meal. But, suffice it to say, our money would have been better spent at a Kentucky Fried Chicken. This meal was a gastronomical mess and most certainly did not live up to the stellar reviews and reputation for which it is tauted.
