Forever my place!: When I first moved to DC in 1979 the first place I was invited to eat was Mama Ayesha's. She was still there, overseeing everything from her table near the kitchen. What a woman! And I've watched all the artistic improvements. It's my very favorite place to bring out of towners. Everyone raves about the food, service and the ambience. It is absolutely top notch. Great ambiance and service, food needs some work: I heard this place, though a long-standing local establishment, was a real dump before it was remodeled a year ago. Now I would describe it as one of the best restaurant atmospheres in Washington. On the inside there are arabesque doors and ironwork, faux candle chandaliers and luxuriously upholstered benches. The terrace, though, lacks a little something. The tables out there are plastic and there's a bus station right next to it. The food is not as great as the ambience. The meat and spinach pies have a stale freezer taste to them. The vegetarian selections are priced just as high as the meat and poultry entrees--a real enigma when one considers a twelve-dollar dish consisting of rice, lentils and onions. The wine list offers a nice selection, though.
