Fabulous food and staff. Great intimate setting. Good for when the rain is falling, and you can't sit outside at the Iron Gate across the street. One of the best. Reservations highly recommended. I had no trouble with noise during a crowded lunch and could hear whispered comments from the person across the table.
Excellent salmon: The salmon here was the BEST I have ever had! It was cooked so perfectly that it just melted in your mouth.
Step into the a different world: The Tabbard Inn is an unexpectedly quaint in right in the heart of Washington with a long standing excellent restaurant that is open to the public. I first went there about 10 years ago and most recently returned this December.
You enter through a lounge with comfortable chairs, small tables and couches and a crackling fireplace (resulting in a somewhat smoky/musty atmosphere reminiscent of a country house). The lounge an adjacent bar were packed all night with people who were clearly enjoying themselves.
Having a reservation eased things and we had our table in minutes, although it took some time for the waiter to arrive. Once he did, he proved both personal and knowledgable (I always find it impressive when the waiter does not need to write down orders and still gets it right (and to the right person).
The menu itself is fairly small, with a nice selection of starters, a diverse main course, and a small list of desserts (not much imagination there). My friends had a stuffed veal breast and bison steak respectively, both excellen, and accompanied with beautiful vegetables. I was less enthusiastic about my snapper (too many capers, you could hardly taste the fennel, and the snapper was dry) why is it that most restaurants seem to have problems broiling a snapper so it remains juicy? it is one of the easiest things to do if marinated properly. I have yet to have a failure at home and virtually never get one that is right (I suppose I should give up trying). Our starters were also excellent (my oysters plump and juicy, the beet salad delicious, as was the siple mixed green salad--straight forward as it should be). One thing to point out. The Inn has one of the best bread baskets I've had in a long time. A beautiful, fresh mixture that I couldnt resist munching on throughout the meal (especially important since there was little starch with the main course (perhaps a concession to the carb conscious). I myself found the dessert list less than exciting and opted for a Cappucino. However the cheesecake with malt topping was clearly delicious, as was the chocolate chip mint ice cream.
On the downside, the room does tend to get rather noisy, so that one ends up shouting more than one should. I look forward to the summer whan you can sit in the courtyard again.
Is it worth a repeat visit. Definitely--just stay away from the fish.
