Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is located just down the street from the National Air and Space Museum . Visitors stroll up a rising, circular incline and view works by Calder, Rodin, and contemporary sculptors. Special exhibits have included works by such artists as Mircea Cantor, Rivane Neuenschwander, and Morris Louis. The museum's collection includes 4000 paintings and 2000 sculptures. Do not miss the sunken sculpture garden across Jefferson Drive. Auguste Rodin's 'Burghers of Calais' is a must-see. Admission to the sculpture garden is free.
The National Museum of the American Indian has been a long awaited museum for Native People. The museum and it's staff are wonderful to work with and have presented to the public Native People based on their voice. Don't miss spending a lot of time there if you make a trip to Washington, D.C.
Excellent Experience: The architecture was breathtaking. The curves of the building had a flow and distinct natural energy. The exhibits and accompanying captions were brilliant. I recommend this as a must see.
not what we thought: we hoped this would about the history of american indians, but all the stuff we saw was a present day tribute to the different tribes. it was not bad, but we really wanted the history and old time artifacts not a water cooler and gas can from wal-mart - that are really a part of an exhibit

The Museum is not a "history museum", and doesn't bill itself as one. It is a cultural museum, and American Indians are alive and living today. Maybe you had some preconceived notions about American Indian being historic figures... well, that is wrong. There is actually plenty of history on display, just the same. An entire wall of spear points, peace medals... pots dating to the 1800s, and a recent exhibition on dresses has items back into the 1700s.
