We ate dinner here one evening after doing a wine tasting tour all day. We had eaten there in the past and had a very good experience.
However, this time I ordered a steak which was very similar to a piece of rubber. I couldn't even cut it with my knife and no one in the establishment even offered to replace it.
Great beer, great traditional, rustic, country fare. Awesome setting. Very cold reception and sincerely disapointing in that regard. It was unclear as to how one should order. Apparently just walking in a sitting at the bar ready to order pints is not acceptable. One should be welcomed into a roadside pub, there to be served. Just be a bit more welcoming is all it needs. I will give it another try on a Tuesday night which seems to be a busy night rather than a Sunday afternoon. I hope it was just a off day.
Took my visiting Illinois family of four there for lunch over a September Saturday and we absolutely loved the atmospher and charm. Our waiter was brand new but helpful and delightful. We questioned him about the internet story on the tavern. The jail door serving as a gate to the courtyard, the resident ghost and bright red phone booth on the grounds. Ordering our lunch was unique and walking outside to our courtyard table with a large wooden spoon to be placed in an empty wine bottle, numbered with our order was unique. I would definitely go back in the near future and have told many of my friends about it. MB
P.S. The liver and onions were incredible.
