I went to the Alamo on 1/31/09 for the very first time and was VERY impressed. The place was decorated quite nicely, the atmoshere was warm and inviting and the prices are reasonable (minus the sides of guac and sour cream @ $2 each). The platter I ordered was plentful and delicious. I live somewhat close to Riverdale and no, it is not ghetto. It is however heavily populated hispanic area - which should not constitute as being ghetto or in a bad neighborhood. I did not have any language barrier problems considering I do not speak a lick of spanish. The waitstaff was very nice and my food came out very quickly. I was still working on one dish when another would come out. I love love love mexican food and can see myself eating there often.
I was there on 11/06/08 after not having been there for about 5 years. The food was wonderful, very fresh. I had the "El Rey" platter but I really couldn't tell the difference between my platter and my companion's a la carte Chimichanga. I had the option of shredded beef or ground beef in my burrito. I chose the shredded and it was good, not too fatty. My companion's Chimichanga was crisp but not over cooked. All of the food came to the table hot and all items were cooked through so that they temperature was maintained while as we worked through the meal.
We had the plaintains which were not on the menu but available. They, like everything else, were very good.
The chips and authentic salsa were good; a little to spicy for me but the waiter brought me a mild version. It was warm and very good. If anything, it was a little thin.
The portions were very generous and the prices were amazing.
With the sopapillas, you get the choice of chocolate or honey. I chose the chocolate. It was good but next time, I will try the honey. It put me in the mind of Native American fried bread. It was very good.
The service was great. The waiter spoke English, not like some of the prior reviews. He was attentive w/o intruding on our meal.
The area seems to have improved since I was last there. It was very quiet out front, even on such a warm November night. The front of the building has a lovely facade and remind you of a building you might find in a small Mexican village. I will return much sooner. In fact, I plan to take some friends there for an early Christmas dinner.
A gem: It is not on the best side of town. However, white tablecloths, no waterspots on the silverware and superb food. The service was as best as it could be for a non english speaking staff. However how many times I have gone to a Chinese restaurant and had a non english speaking server. Whenever I am in the area I make it a point to stop by.
