| About: | In Bethesda, Maryland, this cantina-style restaurant offers the kind of authentic Mexican dishes that are hard to find in Washington. This restaurant has a quiet atmosphere and subdued colors. A garden area is open when weather permits and is very popular among diners. Many of the entrees are accompanied by your choice of a variety of sauces. House specialties include a red snapper, but any of the extensive fish offerings is a good choice. The Chicken Mole and the Roast Pork are also exceptional. |

From the outside this restaurant looks convincing. Entering, one sees that someone went to a lot of effort to create a good ambiance. So far so good. When the food finally arrives though (service not the speediest), it's a disappointment. For a starter I had mushrooms which felt as if they came straight from the can. My entree was a rather stringy chicken with a dull sauce that nowhere near resembled the scrumptious delight implied by the menu's elaborate description. To follow (not quite sure why I was still in the mood to keep experimenting) I had a complex-sounding strawberry dish. When it arrived this was a miniature portion of measly cut strawberries in what seemed like a canned sauce. At least the tortilla chips and salsa were good.
This is some of the best authentic fine Mexican food in the DC area (perhaps the only). The sauces are very good and taste just like places like LaFonda in Mexico City (well maybe not that perfect, but still very good). The spices and use of seeds and herbs provide fantastic dishes that are very different than the packaged and microwaved offerings at many other locations.
The fish and seafood dishes are wonderful often with complex sauces. The offerings are always fresh and the specials should be tried.
The staff is friendly and helpful and the owners and hosts attentive.
Great Food: Great Spanish food, especially if you want the in your mother kitchen style of seafood cooking. Every thing is warm with a family feel to it. The owner is very hospital to everyone and the food is large proportions especially for the price.
